Steelykid!

"These Baby Blogging pictures are old hat," says SteelyKid. "I could do this standing on my head!" You can't really tell from the angle, but she's laughing. This is a game we play from time to time-- I'll tip her over backwards, gently lower her down to the floor, and say "BONK!" Then I pick her back up, and she giggles and laughs and grins hugely. I suspect she's going to share her mother's love of roller coasters.
Well, it is. What with the jumping around, and the giggling, and waving toys in the air, and the tickling and giggling, and taking a walk in the stroller... It just tires a baby right out. (If you've clicked through to warn us that letting SteelyKid sleep on her stomach is Incredibly! Dangerous! and May Cause Instant Death!!!, please don't. We've heard it.)
SteelyKid says "Look at me! I'm HUGE!" Seriously, look at how small she used to be. This is it as far as blogging today, by the way. I have to teach a class, and then I need to get through the copyedits on the book-in-production. Try to contain your disappointment.
SteelyKid is fascinated by the John Archibald Wheeler tribute issue of Physics Today: "I find his popular writings much more digestible than the Big Book of Gravity," she says. "Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler is much too big to put in my mouth."
SteelyKid says, "Being sick is exhausting... Zzzzzzzzzz": She's been running a fever for the last couple of days, which happened to coincide with the closing of the JCC day care center for Passover. This has wreaked a certain amount of havoc on plans for the adults in the house, but it could've been much worse. She's much improved today. Still, running a fever is pretty tiring, so after half of her dinnertime bottle, she decided to rack out for a while. And we snuck in the Baby Blogging picture while she was dozing.
Why is this night different from other nights? Because day care at the Jewish Community Center was closed for Passover, and SteelyKid spent the day at work with Kate, of course. And after a long day of baby lawyering, it's good to relax with a drink: SteelyKid here shows off that she can hold her own bottle, thank you very much. It's not the best Appa-for-scale picture, but new abilities are more important than strict perspective.
I spent most of yesterday huddled under a pile of blankets on the couch-- being feverish and light-headed is great if you're in a Pink Floyd song, but not so much if you're trying to be a functioning adult. It seems to be the Thing That's Going Around this term, though, and while I'm feeling better today, I have a lot of catch-up to do. So, no Deep Thoughts today, but here's a pop-culture topic to pass the time: I recently found myself buying the Radio Edit for "Toe Jam" by "The Brighton Port Authority," a Fatboy Slim side project. It's a bouncy little song with silly lyrics ("A boy looks at…
SteelyKid is eight months old today, and to celebrate... Kate went down to the City for an oral argument. So, SteelyKid and I had our first night at home without Mommy. Fortunately, there was a basketball game last night, and she slept peacefully on my lap through the whole game. I did cop out a bit when it came time for bed, though. I'm a heavy sleeper as it is, and some of the allergy meds I take make me sleepy at the best of times, so I was worried that I wouldn't hear her in the middle of the night. So, I brought her into our room, and she slept on Kate's part of the big bed. We've been…
Shhhh! Stop reading so loudly! You'll wake the baby: It's been a while since we had a sleeping baby picture of the week, and conveniently enough, SteelyKid slept late this morning. So there you go.
SteelyKid has developed a bunch of new skills recently, which she shows off in this video of her sitting up like a big girl, and pulling toys out of her shape sorter box: (Thanks to Ewan and Jenny for the shape sorter box, by the way. It's pretty much the ultimate dog toy (a selection of small pieces that squeak, rattle, or crackle), so we have to be careful about when and where SteelyKid gets to play with it, but she loves it. As you can see.) And now, we're off to investigate big-girl strollers, as SteelyKid has outgrown her infant carrier.
While the DVR piles up enough basketball to allow me to fast-forward through CBS's nine-minute commercial breaks, here's this week's Baby Blogging picture: SteelyKid has been in an amazingly good mood this evening, and here you see her obligingly stretching out to her full length so you can see how much she's grown.
SteelyKid's hard at work on tooth number five, and as a result, her nose has been running like a deranged ultramarathoner. Yesterday, it tipped over into a bit of a sinus infection, so there was no way to get a good Baby Blogging picture. She made up for it this morning, though, as Kate snapped a picture of the two of us discussing photo options: As you can see, she's already happier today. We'll keep her home today, and by Monday, she'l be back to being the Empress of the infant room.
Why in hell is there soy in Italian soft rolls? Parents of sensitive-stomached babies everywhere would like to know.
SteelyKid turned 30 weeks yesterday, and to celebrate this arbitrary numerical milestone, she shows off what a big strong baby she's become: "Look at me! I can lift a whole bison by myself!"
Because everybody could use some extra baby pictures, a reminder from SteelyKid that a baby's reach should exceed her grasp... ... but not for too long.
For this week's Baby Blogging, SteelyKid shows off the latest look for the baby on the go: In this picture, she's all set to face a busy day at day care. She's in her car seat, with the dangling toys on the handle (Left to right, a rattling snail, a butterfly with crinkly wings, and a flower with a squeaker in it. The difference between baby toys and dog toys is not all that large.). You can also see the fleece car seat cover for cold weather, and her little red dog, for when she's actually in the car, and the handle has to be flipped down out of the way. This carrier car seat will not be…
Prior to SteelyKid's arrival, the "Pasta with Butter, Sage, and Parmesan" recipe from Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything had become one of our staple recipes. It's dead simple to make, we always have the stuff on hand (I've been planting sage in pots outside for the last couple of years), and it's very tasty. Unfortunately, SteelyKid reacts badly to dairy, even when Kate's the one eating the dairy. So, parmesan is right out, along with many, many other favorite foods. In an effort to preserve the sanity of the adults in the house, I've been trying to find ways to expand our repertoire of…
For this week's Baby Blogging, SteelyKid couldn't decide whether to show off her ability to grab Appa or her ability to touch her toes, so she tried to do both at once: The color scheme of this outfit is undoubtedly going to lead to some irritating interactions with people in malls ("Why is her outfit blue, if she's a girl?" "Her outfit is actually pink. It just appears blue after the light falls into the immense gravity well created by your stupidity."), but it goes too well with the dinosaur theme of her nursery to pass it up.
It's Darwin's 200th birthday today, and SteelyKid is wearing her ladybug outfit to celebrate: If you can't make it out, the outfit is pink, and covered with little pink and orange ladybugs. The feet are larger ladybugs, complete with antennae. Why is this an appropriate Dawrin's Birthday outfit, you ask? Because God is inordinately fond of beetles.
SteelyKid is six months old today! To celebrate, here's some video of her bouncing around in her jumper: (That's spliced together from a bunch of shorter clips. You can here me babbling inanely in the background, because my brain turns to cheese whenever I'm within about five feet of her. I was tempted to mute all the audio and replace it with some song or another, but decided it would be too cheesey. Also, I like the happy baby squawk at the end.)
