Brain coral is a common name given to corals in the family Faviidae, so called due to their generally spheroid shape and grooved surface which resembles an animal brain. Each head of coral is formed by a colony of genetically identical polyps which secrete a hard skeleton of calcium carbonate; this makes them important coral reef builders like other…

This is a close look at a large rock standing on the grassy traffic island in front of the Senckenberg Naturmuseum. The grain shows how tortured this rock was when it was still soft.

This is a gorgeous fossil shell photographed at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum .. how old is this? What species is this? I don't know .. but I will return and collect more detailed information to share with you (this first visit was a quick pass through the museum to see what they have on display).

Watching this video of a group of West Coast guys singing a cappella on the A train made me want to cry because I miss NYC, its subways and all the fun people I experienced while riding the A train. I would like to suggest to these guys to try rick rolling the A train between 59th and 125th street instead so they aren't interrupted by the conductor and people having to climb…

Yesterday, I stood underneath a skyscraper! No, I was not inside the skyscraper, I was underneath it! I took this picture because I was sure you would never believe me.

If you were here today, I would show you around the Senckenberg Natural History Museum. During your visit, this is one of the many natural wonders you would see.
A reader of mine named Aaron emailed me to ask if I'd respond to Alex Steffen's latest piece at Worldchanging. Aaron writes:
I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about Alex Steffen's recent post over at worldchanging.com. I think that it is a well considered and well informed post that addresses many of the things that make me uncomfortable in your writing.
I'm really not interested in criticizing your work, or anything of that sort; I believe that the sustainability movement as a whole needs to have a strong and well reasoned message if it is to take root with the public at large…

So why am I in Bockenheim again? I went here because I had an appointment to get a bank account. After complaining mightily about this enormous waste of time (I've never had to make an appointment to set up a bank account before), I was surprised and most pleased to meet a personable banker who visits NYC frequently (he has family there and is returning on 15 May for a…

This is an astonishingly gorgeous day in Frankfurt am Main; warm (but not too warm) and everything is exploding into bloom under an impossibly blue sky. I wish you were here with me because I would bring you to my favorite coffee shop in Bockenheimer Warte; Cafe Extrablatt, where they not only give me FREE wifi, but they also cheerfully provide powerpoints (that's a "plug in" or an "…

The weather today was glorious, although a strong wind made for a very cold day. Even though I was wearing my spouse's suit jacket over my t-shirt, I was still very cold.
I went to Bockenheim in west Frankfurt a.M. to open a bank account (have to make an appointment days in advance, sheesh) and afterwards, I went to a…

This is a sculpture that is located outside the front door to the building where I have been spending most of my days, writing. A close look at where this microscope is pointed shows that it is focused on Edinburgh, the home of my Sb colleague and friend, geologist Chris Rowan. It also happens to be the seat of Scottish Parliament.

My friend and colleague, Mike Dunford, is visiting Frankfurt am Main for three days in April (12-14 to be exact). Since I've been digging my way out from under 100 boxes (90 of which are books), I've not been out and about much, so I am seeking help and advice from those of you who know the area around Frankfurt am Main well: if your friend was coming out to visit for a few…
Because of the enormous impact of agriculture on climate change, pick up any book about "green" solutions and you'll find the suggestions that you grow a vegetable garden. Bang into the "we can't go on as we are" end of the environmental movement (mine), and you'll see the general assumption that growing food is part of any process of adaptation to lower resource use.
This often then morphs into the assumption that all of us should be able to grow all of our food, or a vast majority of it - that sustainability means the country life for everyone. You might think that because I do produce a…

Okay, this is all in this photo series. Sorry about this, but of course, I do have thousands of images of NYC that I haven't used on my blog, so if you really wish to see more images of NYC, I can certainly dig them up for you. This weekend, I plan to get out and start photographing my new home: Frankfurt am Main, and the surrounding areas.

Delta Airlines sent me an email, telling me it is time to check in for my return flight to the USA, which departs tomorrow at 1140am from Frankfurt. What do you think; should I return?

This is one in a series of images I took on one of my last days in NYC. This was the last day I carried my camera with me as I ran around, collecting paperwork for my impending emigration. The day was glorious, the weather, perfect. It's rare days (in NYC) like this that made me wonder what I was doing to leave for a city I've never seen, and to live in a country I've never visited.

Helsinki has carriage horses in its parks, just as NYC does.
Image: GrrlScientist, 5 July 2009 [larger view].
I only photographed these horses, I didn't go for a carriage ride, although I think a carriage ride would have been fun (even though it was raining frequently throughout this day).
Unlike NYC carriage horses, most of which are quite fond of people, these horses were quite cross and seemed to really hate people.

Here's a look at the Kauppatori open air market from a little coffee tent that my friend and I (and close to 50 other people) hid under after it started to rain.
The Kauppatori open air market looks like almost any other open air market in the United States, and probably in most European countries.
