Here's a closer look at the completed chalk art on the floor of the Frankfurt subway station in Hauptwache.
Why? Because you must explain how mitosis works…using Krispy Kremes.
Make sure they understand the chemistry of fats and carbohydrates first!
How can you turn a monkey into a man? By feeding it "Rex" Brand Extract of beef, of course!
I might just have to throw in a bid on this Victorian promotional card. In bizarre fashion it combines several mythical elements common to popular depictions of human origins; that we evolved in a straight-line fashion, that consumption of meat made all the difference in our transformation, and that men "led the way" in the evolution of our species. Each of these misconceptions has been cast out of the scientific arena in turn, but they still pop up from time to time, especially in advertising.…

This is a fascinating stop-motion video of the creation of artist Carel Brest van Kempen's painting, Stargazing. This painting tells a cautionary tale about a Peregrine Falcon that has been poisoned by pesticides sprayed in a person's yard.
Carel Brest van Kempen published a stunning book, Rigor Vitae: Life Unyielding [my review] and writes the art blog that goes by the same name, that might be of interest to you.

You can see the pencil sketch on the artwork on the right side. I wish I could have returned later to photograph the finished piece.

More artworks, drawn in chalk on the floor of the Frankfurt subway station in Hauptwache. I managed to capture one of these works as it was being created (the blue-and-white image in the center), alongside two others that are completed (more photographs of these works in the days to follow, same time, same place).
My brother-in-law Peter Köhler is not only a very nice guy, but also a successful artist. He regularly exhibits his work at Magnus Karlsson's gallery, one of Stockholm's most prestigious venues. Peter's next show there is scheduled for 9 Jan. through 7 Feb. and is titled "Black Magic".
"A study visit to the Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle, Cornwall -- where Peter Köhler was given access to the museum's collections, photo archives and library -- and repeated travels in China form points of departure. Peter Köhler works with spontaneous figuration and improvisation, but some of the…

Cell biologist, Dirk Pacholsky, created this video. He writes; "Certainly it´s irony in the title, because these images never made it to publication status. Sitting over the microscope, whilst listening to music the idea popped up to combine microscopic imagery with electronic music. The Scientist will certainly see more than a carpenter, but both might enjoy the beauty. Concerning the accompanying music, it is Venetian Snares (oh…

Kate Street
The delicacy of Kate Street's pencil drawings belie their sinister undertones: a garden of chimeric orchids flowering with skulls, intricate skeletons of birds perching on leaves, tuberous roots that are half heart and half honeycomb. Her installations, on the other hand, pull no punches. In Bird in the Hand II, disembodied hands clinically display the fragments of a dissected bird.
Street told London's Timeout.com,
My interest in nature is how we like to classify it and manicure it and make it perfect. I like Dutch still lifes of flowers and animals because…

This hilarious video animation tells the story of a rookie secret agent who is faced with a problem seldom covered in basic training: what to do when a curious pigeon gets trapped inside his multi-million dollar, government-issued nuclear briefcase.
This is very cool: it's a series of scanning electron micrographs of spider book lungs. I'd like to hang a few of those on my wall.

Can mute monks sing? Yes they can, as you will discover in this amusing video of mute monks singing the Halleluiah Chorus.
Hat-tip to my good friend and former SB colleague, John Wilkins, who is celebrating these holidays as a newly employed (several months) tenure-track professor and published author in beautiful Australia. Go there and wish him happy holidays!
