When the whalers start using "nonviolent" methods, then the activists should reciprocate. Sitting around thinking good thoughts won't stop the killings, as the Japanese make a complete mockery of the situation.
Those whaling bastards are the criminals, as far as I'm concerned. And since their government won't stop them (indeed, those bastards help the other bastards), they're fair game for anyone seeking to enforce the moratorium (since their "research" excuse is pure bullshit as anyone with two functioning brain cells can see.)

I recognize the problems which would make such a solution unworkable, so, on a pragmatic level, I wouldn't recommend arming the activists' ships with such missiles. So, in that sense, it was sarcasm, of a sort.
Nevertheless, if someone where to send some of those whalers to the bottom of the ocean, I would be quite satisfied at the result. Those pieces of filth have been warned enough that what they're doing is unacceptable. Anyone getting on those boats is a fair target, in my book.
The actual whalers are mostly just guys doing a job, because they need the money. It's the whaling industry you need to deal with, not the deckhands. Deckhands are highly fungible.

Neither is beyond guilt. The deckhands are not innocent bystanders; they're the ones actually doing the killing. It may be that the deckhands are mere puppets, doing a job for money, but that doesn't absolve them of their responsibility for their actions. "Just following company orders" is no excuse.
It's all about fungibility in the end. Just too much funging going on. (what the fung does that word even mean and who uses it)
What about bluefin tuna? I know they may not be as large or charismatic as whales, but the fishery should have been closed decades ago, and a 200kg fish can fetch $100k in Tokyo. No one is out there attacking the fishermen, mostly because the killing seems much more humane (?), and maybe commercial fishermen are seen as guys just doing an honest job versus the "heartless bastards" employed in the whaling industry. Just as consumer awareness alone can't save collapsing fisheries, attacking the whaling industry at the ground level is probably ineffective. The real target are the major importers of the product and their lobbies that secure subsidies, not the fishermen.
