This is how it's done in this country.

Here's the latest question from HQ: How is it that all the PIs (Tara, PZ, Orac et al.), various grad students, post-docs, etc. find time to fulfill their primary objectives (day jobs) and blog so prolifically? Good question. I often wonder about it myself. In my case, a big part of the answer is…
How is An Inconvenient Truth doing at the box office? Pretty well. The gross takings have increased every weekend and have almost reached $10,000,000. It's already the number 7 on the all time box office list for documentaries. How does John Hinderaker and UPI report this? (My emphasis.) UPI…
I'm working on more substantive, mathy posts, but in the meantime, I'm pissed, so I'm making a quick off-topic post. With the horrible things that are going on in Gaza right now, I've gotten a raft of antisemitic spam. Most of it has been through private mail, but some has been in comments on the…
Many in the Punditocracy are proclaiming that the U.S. is a center-right country. While it's pretty obvious that they're saying this to justify their feeble pronouncements, that's not what really bugs me about this center-right hooey. That statement is based on the observation that the majority of…

Time to get Captain Watson some anti-ship missiles!!! That'll teach those whaling bastards!

Anti-ship missiles? Are you nuts? Yeah, that is what we need; An escalation of the already out of control situation in the South Pacific. I hate that ideas of nonviolence are lost upon so many eco-activists, because it really does not make our causes any easier when lunatics like Paul Watson are out on the water committing crimes.

Chill out Nathan, Morris' comment was oozing sarcasm.

@Nathan,
When the whalers start using "nonviolent" methods, then the activists should reciprocate. Sitting around thinking good thoughts won't stop the killings, as the Japanese make a complete mockery of the situation.

Those whaling bastards are the criminals, as far as I'm concerned. And since their government won't stop them (indeed, those bastards help the other bastards), they're fair game for anyone seeking to enforce the moratorium (since their "research" excuse is pure bullshit as anyone with two functioning brain cells can see.)

@Chad,
I recognize the problems which would make such a solution unworkable, so, on a pragmatic level, I wouldn't recommend arming the activists' ships with such missiles. So, in that sense, it was sarcasm, of a sort.

Nevertheless, if someone where to send some of those whalers to the bottom of the ocean, I would be quite satisfied at the result. Those pieces of filth have been warned enough that what they're doing is unacceptable. Anyone getting on those boats is a fair target, in my book.

The actual whalers are mostly just guys doing a job, because they need the money. It's the whaling industry you need to deal with, not the deckhands. Deckhands are highly fungible.

@Dunc,
"The actual whalers are mostly just guys doing a job, because they need the money. It's the whaling industry you need to deal with, not the deckhands. Deckhands are highly fungible."

Neither is beyond guilt. The deckhands are not innocent bystanders; they're the ones actually doing the killing. It may be that the deckhands are mere puppets, doing a job for money, but that doesn't absolve them of their responsibility for their actions. "Just following company orders" is no excuse.

It's all about fungibility in the end. Just too much funging going on. (what the fung does that word even mean and who uses it)

What about bluefin tuna? I know they may not be as large or charismatic as whales, but the fishery should have been closed decades ago, and a 200kg fish can fetch $100k in Tokyo. No one is out there attacking the fishermen, mostly because the killing seems much more humane (?), and maybe commercial fishermen are seen as guys just doing an honest job versus the "heartless bastards" employed in the whaling industry. Just as consumer awareness alone can't save collapsing fisheries, attacking the whaling industry at the ground level is probably ineffective. The real target are the major importers of the product and their lobbies that secure subsidies, not the fishermen.
