Legend of Zelda Sounds Make Me Happy

Yes, I am a big fat nerd. I've been playing Final Fantasy 12 nearly since I woke up this morning, trying to finish all those blasted side-quests. This is pathetic! On the other hand, has anyone done any studies on endorphin release following reinforcement in gaming? You know, that little happy feeling you get when you beat a boss or level up? Think that ever-recognizable chime in Zelda when you found a secret passage!

You have found a secret!

After browsing this guys site, where I got the Zelda sound effect, I suddenly felt a lot better about my life.

Unless you've been living under a rock, or you are the CEO of Seed Media Group (SMG), you are well aware that Bora Zivkovic left ScienceBlogs 24 hours ago. Shockingly, despite this important loss, Adam Bly, CEO of SMG, has not communicated with any of us who remain at ScienceBlogs about this loss…
Ah, yes, Washington, DC. That's where I am right now, deep in the belly of the government beast, attending the meeting of The Society of Surgical Oncology. It's usually a great meeting, except for the distressing tendency of surgeons here to act, well, too much like surgeons. For example, consider…
Two words sum up last night's poker: high variance. It was truly feast or famine night. I think there were more showdowns that ended with "Holy shit!" than ever before, as good hands got beat by great hands that were slow played time and time again. It started for me almost immediately with pocket…
Ok, what are the people at Quirk Books on? I have to say, I love the cover of the book, and the typographical trailer is cute - but isn't this just blatant meme abuse? Quirk explains The Meowmorphosis thus. . . "One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that…

What could possibly be more invigorating than the "du-du-du-dahhh duhh dahh dut-dadaahhh" FF victory music?

On-line Gamers Anonymous? But if the addiction is being online, then doesn't it seem cruel to make them use an ONLINE help board? Why not just hold AA meetings in a bar? :P Probably for the best though, the in-person meetings would be filled with a lot of shuffling and shoe-staring type awkwardness. And then boasting about character stats.

And yes I agree, that FF victory anthem makes me feel 10 ft tall!!

I'm going to start incorporating that into my lab meeting powerpoints.

"And after running the experiments..."

♫ "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Dooooo" ♫

"I found X, Y, and Z!"

Mmmmm. Side quests. So many games I want to play. So many games I want to replay (Adventures of Riddick is calling me from the xbox). So little time. Especially when side quests are like crack.

have you played the new wii zelda?

Haha!
I've actually spent a great deal of the day playing the new Zelda. In fact, I just turned it off a few minutes ago.

It's all kinds of fantastic (and the "you've found a secret" noise is just as enjoyable as it ever was).

If you like Zelda sounds, do you like Zelda alot?

  1. Go to http://vimm.net/ and find and download the Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past rom.
  2. Go to http://www.ZSNES.com/ and download the ZSNES 1.5 Super Nintendo Emulator (best one out there).
  3. At http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/197/, download a ROM hack called "Parallel Worlds."
  4. From here at Romhacking.net, download the Lunar IPS patcher so you can use the hack.
  5. Unzip everything into the same folder. Use Luna IPS to patch the .ips file to the .smc of Zelda.
  6. Open ZSNES and configure your keys in the CONFIG menu. Also make sure to enable surround sound emulation and hi-quality low-pass.
  7. Play the game and enjoy the greatest version of the LTTP platform ever.

Caveat: If you do not own a cartridge of Link to the Past, it is required of you by law to delete the ROM after 24 hours of use. Luckily, I do. And you can also find a link to buy it from Vimm.net if it's still available. if not, try eBay. If you bother to go by this 24-hour thing, you'll never finish the game.

Wow, thanks Erik! I think I do own the cartridge (somewhere in my parent's storage unit). I wonder if that counts. LOZ was always my favorite game.

Gah! Remember that cartridge was GOLD? It was the pride of my NES collection.

Finished FF12 over christmas...great game, love the hell out of gambits...only complaint is that the mmog style meant the battle won music only played after bosses. Sucks! I guess being able to avoid random encounters balances it out, though. I'm going to have to find a friend with a ps3 when ff13 comes out.

People having to "detox" from games. By far the most effective anti-game for me has been the advent of voice chat like roger wilco and ventrilo. Once I heard how...nerdy...the competition was, I could never go back. I swear you'll never find a group of people with more annoying voices than the people that play mmorpgs. Especially the way they laugh...

Case in point, Leeroooy Jenkins.

Oh, you're welcome for that info, Shelley. I put ZSNES.com and the Parallel Worlds hack to my favorite social bookmarking sites to help spread the word. The hack is so complete, time-consuming, and compelling that no Zelda fan should miss out on it.

I only have one problem with it. Since the main character here is a treasure hunter, it would definitely have been appropriate to incorporate the Pikori from Minish Cap, since it is they who hide random mines, bugs, and rupees in the hedges, and also created the master sword. I know, the Minish Cap sprites would have been difficult to incorporate, but flash creators at Newgrounds.com have created 16-bit sprites for all sorts of things that I used to think not possible. I think, since they worked for at least a year on the hack, they could have had the necessary help to do this.

Or they could have done it the other way. One could assume that it is because the Pikori are not around to leave treasure everywhere that this world is rampant with treasure-hunters. And they could have had a few characters make aside comments about them no longer existing or the 7 sages from the other dimension talking about them.

Wow, there's tons to discuss about this hack. :P

Oh! I forgot!

Also, if you go to http://www.zophar.net/, you can find finely ripped .nsf and .spc music files from the Zelda games. You have to download a separate player or the Winamp plugins (recommended) to play them, but it's very satisfying. He also has a very useful cheat package for LTTP if the Parallel Worlds hack is just too damned hard for you. /wink

Most soothing Zelda music is the theme from Adventure of Link when you enter the towns (and the different one when you enter a house).

Think of how many Poincare Conjectures would've been proven if nerds didn't grow up in an society where video games were common...

EQ2 and the soon to be released Vaguard SoH (beta testing it) have me right now. The music in those MMORPG games has actually gotten pretty advanced.

I hear ya. I'm a total dork but I can't bring myself to get on those voice chat servers.
