What's JK Rowling Doing These Days?

Apparently, JK Rowling is writing a detective novel .. big surprise to me (not), since I thought her HP books read like detective novels for kids.

J.K. Rowling has been spotted at cafes in Scotland working on a detective novel, a British newspaper reported Saturday.

The Sunday Times newspaper quoted Ian Rankin, a fellow author and neighbor of Rowling's, as saying the creator of the "Harry Potter" books is turning to crime fiction. [story]

As you might recall, Rowling wrote the first drafts of the Potter story in Edinburgh cafes. At that time, she was a struggling single mother who wrote in cafes to save on the heating bill at home. Of course, now she is Britain's richest woman who is worth $1 billion, and her seven Potter books have sold more than 335 million copies worldwide. Imagine that!

None of the reports I've seen on this have indicated whether her new book will be aimed at children or if it will be adult fiction, have you heard anything on that? I doubt it matters much, her fanbase pretty much spans all ages at this point and I'm sure everyone will be itching to buy whatever she churns out, but I'll still be interested to see whether she chooses to stay in the children's section of bookstores.

A cafe is not a bad place to work if the waitstaff tolerate it. One has food and drink available on demand; the white noise from the blended conversation and surrounding bustle is nice; one does not feel isolated; and the temptations of home such as the sofa, bed or entertainment system are far away.
