Harry Potter Postage Stamps

Has this ever happened before, where a book cover is made into a postage stamp? Well, it might have happened in Britain at some point (and it apparently has already happened in France not too long ago), but I'll bet it has never happened before in America. Anyway, to the right is a photo of the seven Harry Potter postage stamps that are set to be released on 17 July, four days before the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is released. Each stamp depicts a cover from one of the British editions of the seven Harry Potter books.

In addition to these seven book covers, the Royal Mail's Head of Special Stamps, Julietta Edgar, said that a five-stamp miniature sheet will also be available (not pictured). This mini-sheet will feature the Hogwarts school crest and those of its four houses, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Griffindor.

The commemorative stamps are part of the post office's tradition of celebrating "social themes and important occasions central to our way of life," said Julietta Edgar, who is in charge of special stamps at Royal Mail.

"There's no doubt that J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, published in dozens of languages worldwide, have made a phenomenal impact on our reading habits," she said.

J.K. Rowling, author of the books, has said two major characters will die in the final episode. The Harry Potter books have sold more than 325 million copies worldwide.
