Space and time are modes by which we think, not conditions under which we live.

Last week, John Edwards put forward his healthcare plan which got pretty positive reviews - not an all-out single-payer system, but a good step in the right direction, pitting private and state providers in direct competition with each other (and since state can provide better care more efficiently for less money than any business, in the long run it should become popular enough to displace private health insurance from all but the richest people's plans) which should reduce the cost of healthcare over time.

Considering the name of this blog, you may not be surprised that I am a sucker for clocks and watches. If I had more walls and more money, I'd collect them by dozens (hundreds?). Grow-a-Brain has been collecting links to sites showing all kinds of clocks.
I wish I could have something like this, this or this for the house and this for the pocket.

Every now and then I see articles about the "future of the car", like this one. I am trying to figure out what is so smart about the mindset of the people who think these things up. Leaving comfort, speed, entertainment, information, fuel efficiency and environmental impact aside and just focusing on safety, what are these "futurists" thinking?
They have two general ways of thinking about this. The first is: make the car bigger, heavier and built of stronger metarials so that it can withstand…

Female Antarctic Seals Give Cold Shoulder To Local Males:
Female Antarctic fur seals will travel across a colony to actively seek males which are genetically diverse and unrelated, rather than mate with local dominant males. These findings, published in this week's Nature, suggest that female choice may be more widespread in nature than previously believed and that such strategies enable species to maintain genetic diversity.

After a whirlwind trip to Thailand and a love affair, Jenna is back in school and her mind is focused on science again. Check out her new pictures from the Herpetology class.
I mentioned before that Archy is about to get laid off. Now, he explains his educational beckground, work history and acquired skills so, if you are reading this, and you are in a position to find him a new job, please take a look.
Under attack, Pandagon has been down all day. But you can see here (and re-posted here) what scum of the Earth resides on the political Right in this country. This is a good time to read this again. And please find time to read all ten parts of this series on eliminationism in America. Sensing a long-term, if not permanent loss, the wounded beast of the Right is lashing at everything in sight and they are not shy to use physical force if needed.

Last week I had lunch with a good old friend of mine, Jim Green. He got his degree in Zoology, then a law degree (patent law) and is now coming back for yet another degree in biological and chemical engineering. He did his research on snakes, so we reminisced and laughed about the time several years ago (that was before Kevin joined the lab, which is why I was recruited for this study in the first place) when we were taking blood samples from copperheads.
What we wanted to do is see if snakes have melatonin and if so, if it shows a diurnal rhythm in concentration like it does in other…
Ten months later (this was posted first on March 22, 2006), he has a tenure-track position there. Not a bad idea to give a good talk at various places....

I have to brag about my famous brother and at the same time provide you with some quality reading about Milosevic and Serbia. Feel free to tranfer the ideas to the USA, the victimhood of the fundamentalist Christians etc.
First, here is an article about a talk my brother gave in Alberta the other day:

And there's many, many more here. Do not look on empty stomach. I was just about to eat an eclair, but now I think I'll wait a little....
