Skeptics in the Pub!

It's about time! Thanks to some terrific folks, like my buddy JB, we are having our first SE Michigan Skeptics in the Pub. This is an informal pilot, originally a small get-together, but seems to be growing. If you're in SE Michigan and want to have a beer with a group of like-minded folks, including this blogger, and perhaps some other better-known bloggers, c'mon down.

I found this quite intriguing: Those thinking that online social networking is a substitute for face-to-face interactions might want to think again. Recent research in psychology suggests there are some benefits to real-life socializing that the Internet just can't provide; researchers at Stanford…
This afternoon, I attended the first meeting of a DIY biology group in Seattle, after a kind invitation from one of the founders.   DIY, for those of you new to the acronym, stands for "Do It Yourself."   But, you say, there are lots of people who do biology on their own. Some people keep pets…

I'm jealous! I just signed up on meetup to try to find some skeptics to start a local group in my rural area - found 5 people, most of whom live about 2 hours away.

Easy on the beer -- thar's CALORIES in that thar brew!! (Just remember, Guinness Stout is as low-calorie as those sex-in-a-canoe "lite" beers and tastes SO much better . . . .)

Set up the next meeting tonight-and announce it tomorrow, so I can be there next time. Please. Thank you. Have a good time.

Yeah, this was kinda a first shot at it, there'll be plenty of promotion/warning next time.

Thanks for posting this Pal (and Orac too). The first SE Michigan Skeptics in the Pub was a lot of fun. Thanks to CFI for posting it on their Facebook page.

I think that it will be a regular occurrence. Bout 10 people made it,and from the looks of it, this could easily grow. We may consider registering officially with Skeptics in the Pub and it looks like CFI is also interested in promoting it.

Last night was informal. Introductions, beers and burgers. The venue was ok, but if there are more than 10 people, we will need a bigger place with less loud music so that we can all talk. We probably will arrange for a topic to be presented by one of us at the meetings once it gets organized a bit more.

Nice to know that there is a real skeptical community right here at home to meet with.

This JB that you refer seemed like a nice fellow, but he kept ruining the silverware.

I hope you can make this a recurring event — Boston Skeptics in the Pub has been a lot of fun! We've been fortunate in finding a good venue (the Harvard Square Tommy Doyle's lets us have the whole top floor for a couple hours Monday nights) and good speakers (lots of science people in Boston — who would have thunk it?). One month when academics were all out of town and we couldn't find a speaker, we did trivia night instead, which was also good.
