MUST LISTEN - Radiolab

Over my ear phones I hear Ira Glass tell the audience of This American Life about Radiolab, a show produced by WNYC (New York's NPR). Then a couple of days later while perusing down Ouroboros I see this:

In case you missed it on the air, you can hear the Mortality episode of WNYC's clever and insightful program Radiolab program as a podcast. In this episode, hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich (who are the science equivalent of the Tappett Brothers without the lame jokes and annoying laughter ) tackle the question that keeps Ouroboros readers awake at night-- why can't we have more life? The show's highlight is a very informative interview with Leonard Hayflick, with a sidelight about Alexis Carrel (worst. Nobel laureate. ever) and the scandalous Scandinavian origins of widely-used cell culture lines. Also featured is the ubiquitous and ever-enthusiastic Cynthia Kenyon (oh, hi boss... do you often read this blog?) and robotic approaches to care of the aged in Japan.

Well a couple of days ago I subscribed to the Radiolab podcast feed and then listened to three of the episodes, Time, Morality and Mortality. Wow!

(And if you haven't subscribed to the This American Life podcast - where have you been?).

Season 3 of New York Public Radio's RadioLab is coming soon, in May 2007. Seasons one and two are available on-line, at WNYC. Have you heard? It isn't Talk of the Nation -- Science Friday, with Ira Flatow. But it is co-hosted by NPR Science Correspondent Robert Krulwich. He hosts with…
Jad Abumrad, co-host of the amazing "Radiolab" just won a McArthur genius grant - a $500,000 prize with almost no limits on how to spend it. If you've never listened to Radiolab, stop reading blogs, go download an episode sit back with a good pair of headphones. It's beautifully produced, a joy to…
I thought Neurontic readers might be interested in this profile I recently did of Radio Lab Host Jad Abumrad. If you don't know about WNYC's cult "science" show yet, you should take the time to listen to it. Why? Because as Jad says: "The people who listen to Radio Lab like that feeling of…
Via Alex, WNYC's Radiolab podcast features a wonderful commencement address by Robert Krulwich to the Caltech class of 2008, making the case for the importance of telling stories about science to the general public. This fits in wonderfully with what I said last week about science popularization.…

I subscribe to well over 20 podcasts, and Radiolab is definitely in my top 5 favorites. The only complaint I have is that it isn't put out on a regular update schedule (ie every Thursday, like the Nature podcast), but I know that's due to the extensive research and high quality editing/production involved, it's definitely a must-listen!
