Jon Stewart
Not surprisingly, being a guy who leans mildly left, I like The Daily Show. Jon Stewart and his writers are incredibly adept at skewering all manner of bovine excrement, be it political, scientific, or otherwise. In particular, the way Stewart and company skewered the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) for its promotion of the chemical industry. Indeed, Samantha Bee, who did the infamous Little Crop of Horrors segment that mocked ACSH for its defense of pesticides über alles and its criticism of Michelle Obama's healthy eating initiative.
Another Daily Show segment by Samantha Bee…
In his role pinch-hitting as The Daily Show anchor while Jon Stewart directs a feature film called Rosewater, John Oliver has demonstrated a candid, hilarious fury that is unmatched in its impact by Stewart's usual well-meant silliness. People have called Stephen Colbert the heir to 1950's primetime BS-caller Edward R. Murrow, and Colbert is certainly unmatched in his own way, but after seeing Oliver in the limelight, it's hard to imagine a more urgent rebuttal to the media and political hypocrisy of our day.
Last night Oliver didn't have to work hard to demonstrate the ridiculousness of…

Friend Jerah sent this to me, pointing out that since I don't use a refrigerator, my family is among the .04% of the US population that constitutes the "deserving' poor. I'm so proud!
I thought it had to do with income, in which case I'm not, in fact, poor, but no, it is all about the appliance ownership! We're really getting somewhere now - who knew picking up a microwave at a yard sale or living in a subsidized apartment with an actual fridge…
I was there! Not that it was easy. We decided to park in VA (in the parking garage of the National Science foundation - totally by accident) and take the metro in, but evidently the entire world had the same idea; the metro was about a 2 hour wait, and the bus stop had like 3 buses worth of people, and only two buses scheduled in the next hour. So we decided to walk the 6 miles to the National Mall, with less than an hour before the thing started. I was at Obama's inauguration two years ago, and there were screens and speakers all the way to the Lincoln Memorial, but apparently Comedy Central…
Jon Stewart somehow seems to grasp the real importance of Obama's speech:

If only we'd thought about getting off oil before! But at least the dinos didn't die in vain!
The good news is that GWB is probably right - we won't be using as much foreign oil in 2025.

In this video, The Daily Show host, Jon Stewart muses "Mr. President, I can't tell if you're a Jedi -- 10 steps ahead of everything or if this whole health care thing is kickin' your ass just a little bit. Why is this so hard?" He rants. "Why can't you guys just stay on message? Remember the Bush team? Little bit of discipline, little bit of repetition. They sold us a war nobody wanted and nobody needed."

Okay, Jonah saw this first -- but in case you missed it there, here's a snip from Jon Stewart interviewing Oliver Sacks about music and the brain.
This is a nice meeting. I've not met Stewart, but I had the pleasure to spend some time with Sacks while working on a couple stories, and he once gave me a book about Alexander Agassiz because he liked my book about Agassiz -- and I'm happy to see him exert his usual charm and humor here in this Stewart segment.

From Andrew Sullivan:
I watched the Daily Show with growing shock last night. Did you expect that? I expected a jolly and ultimately congenial discussion, after some banter. What Cramer walked into was an ambush of anger. He crumbled from the beginning. From then on, with the almost cruel broadcasting of his earlier glorifying of financial high-jinks, you almost had to look away. This was, in my view, a real cultural moment. It was a storming of the Bastille. It was, as Fallows notes, journalism.
This is truly is something to see, just as Stewart's pieces on Cramer and CNBC, back to his…
I noted earlier that Harold Varmus, Obama's key science advisor, was on the Daily Show, but after viewing again the clip of his short appearance I thought it should get its own little show here. Varmus is everything you'd want as a public face to science -- immensely accomplished but amiable and everyday as could be. It's a nice little clip and just short of 7 minutes.
