Mathematical model of a zombie outbreak

The latest tome of Infectious Disease Modelling Research Progress contains an unusual paper investigating the dynamics of a zombie outbreak: "When Zombies Attack!: Mathematical Modelling of an Outbreak of Zombie Infection", by four Canadian mathematicians, concludes that the best defence against zombies is to 'hit hard and hit often'. This story broke last week, but I've been so busy that I've not had time to cover it - or read the paper. Thankfully the excellent Mark Henderson at the Times Science Blog has got my back with an excellent article that includes some extra curious info not reported elsewhere.

But why write a paper on the science of zombies when you can write a whole book?

In the event of a zombie epidemic, scientists have settled on an unambiguous plan for survival: be aggressive. Mathematicians from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University modelled the outcome of responses to zombie infection including quarantine, development of a cure, and "regular,…
I have a paper out in the Christmas issue of BMJ on the coming zombie apocalypse. You read that right. And yes, it was peer-reviewed. I've discussed previously how I've used the attention paid to zombies to talk about infectious diseases with children and other audiences; and to bring some science…
On January 23rd 2007, Tet Zoo ver 2 - the ScienceBlogs version of Tetrapod Zoology - graced the intertoobz for the first time. There was rapturous applause, swooning, the delight of millions. Looking back at it now, that very first ver 2 post is rather odd. It's on the blood-feeding behaviour of…
I've been incredibly busy this term, but not so busy I couldn't create more work for myself. Specifically, by writing an opinion piece for Physics World about the FTL neutrino business, that just went live on their web site: The result quickly turned into one of the most covered physics stories of…

Wildfires are similar: if you don't get a handle on a forest fire quickly, it will get away from you. The fires in California north of L.A. tripled overnight last night.
