See You on the Other Side...

...of the Atlantic. After a few stress-inducing bits the less said about which the better, preparations are basically complete, and we're heading out for London tonight. In the highly unlikely event that I haven't done enough plugging of my appearances, here's a compact list of where you'll be able to find me if you happen to be in Europe the next couple of weeks:

-- I'm giving a talk about the material in the new book on Wednesday the 13th at 6:30pm in Bristol, at the Institute of Physics. I'm doing this one TED-style, with no words on the slides, so it's both exciting and terrifying. Especially since I'm trying to make jokes about soccer to a British audience... Anyway, I think there are still seats, so come watch me fly without a net.

-- I'm on program(me) at Worldcon, the most important item of which is the Kaffeeklatsch on Thursday evening, which is just me hanging out and chatting with people for an hour. I'm a little worried that basically nobody will show up for this, so if you're going to be at the con, stop by.

-- It's too late to sign up to attend, but for completeness, I'll list it: I'm speaking about cool atomic physics experiments at the Nordita Workshop for Science Writers on Friday the 29th.

In between those widely spaced events, we'll be doing touristy stuff, but when and where isn't really your business. There may be semi-regular updates here, and on other social media, or there may not. That lack of schedule is part of what makes it a vacation, after all...

Kate and I had a very nice time doing touristy things in Bath yesterday during the day-- old church, very old hot spring, Georgian architecture-- then went on to Bristol where I gave a talk on the forthcoming book, as you can see in the picture above. I would ordinarily include a SlideShare link to…
Since somebody asks nearly every time I mention my TED@NYC appearance back in October, I can now confirm that I will not be speaking at TED this year. Which I found out the same way as everybody else: when the full speaker list for this year's TED was released today. If you're curious about the…
Having just returned from a long trip where I gave three talks, one of the first things I saw when I started following social media closely again was this post on how to do better presentations. The advice is the usual stuff-- more images, less text, don't read your slides, and for God's sake,…
I'm up way too early with jet lag, looking over Twitter, and ran into Nick Falkner's report on the TED panel I moderated at Worldcon, which reminded me that I never did write anything about the con. Late is probably still better than never, so here are some quick long-after-the-fact comments about…

Have a good trip! Looking forward to seeing you :)
