May I Be Excused? My Brain Is Full.

I've had a lot of weird things happen in the time I've been teaching, but the above image is my new favorite message from a student. We gave an exam Thursday night, so a couple of my colleagues canceled class on Friday, but I'm going to be at DAMOP the last week of class, so I want to get a little bit ahead to reduce the amount of stuff other people have to cover for me. So I had a class as usual.

All but two of the students showed up, which either means we terrified them with the exam, or they actually like the class. And, actually, there was only one student who didn't show up at all-- the other who missed the class actually came in while I was setting things up, then slipped out again when I left the room to get something. He left behind the note you see in the "featured image" above.

It's been a bad couple of weeks at work, but this made my day. After I finished my class, I ducked out quickly before anything could screw up my good mood. And now, we're taking the kids down to Grandma and Grandpa's for a Memorial Day cookout tomorrow with the cousins, and to recharge for another busy week. See you Tuesday.

This week has been a particularly good one for highlighting how weird my career is. On Thursday, I gave a lecture for the Union College Academy of Lifelong Learning, talking for nearly two hours about Einstein (in Memorial Chapel, shown in the "featured image" above). On Friday, I drove clean…
Classes for the Fall term start next week, which means that things are starting to gear up on campus. We've been sent our class rosters, and lists of new freshman advisees, and have started to have meetings about team-taught courses and department policies and the like. And, of course, the new…
We took a rare long weekend to go to a family party for Memorial Day at my parents' (Kate and the kids always get the day off, but I usually have to teach; this year, I'm doing a team-taught class, and the other person was willing to cover my Monday spot), thus the lack of a weekly update post. The…
A few years ago, I taught one of our "SRS" classes, which are supposed to introduce students to research at the college level-- I blogged about it while the course was in progress. I taught it again in the recently-concluded Winter term, but didn't blog much about it because I was mostly doing the…

Phew. I was afraid the student had left you half a donut.

I always have the capacity to learn: the new information just overwrites some old information :-(

Do user instructions for lined Paper 1.05 (Unpunched) specify writing orthogonal to ruling? Cursive mixes with printing. Psychology educates us that third person social communication demands healthcare insurance-reimbursed interminable therapeutic intervention. Note John's Skinnerian modification of your behavior.

Printwriting is the new cursive. I have many students who were never taught cursive in school (it is not on the state mandated exams) and have trouble reading it.

I also shared the concern @#1 so I was relieved when I saw your explanation in the caption.
