The Dark Knight

We'll keep this short and spoiler-free:

Kate and I went to see The Dark Knight yesterday afternoon. The verdict: It was an excellent entry in the "gritty comic-book adaptation" genre, and a very solid follow-up to Batman Begins.

Heath Ledger as the Joker was excellent. I see here in my blogger guidelines that I'm supposed to say something about Jack Nicholson, but really, the two movies are too different for that to make any sense.

It ran a bit long, but I'm inclined to forgive the length because it let them take one of the major plot lines in a different direction than I was expecting, wrapping up something that I thought was in there as an obvious sequel hook.

I'm not sure what they will do as a sequel, but I'm sure they can think of something if this movie does well. And it deserves to do well.

So, Kate and I hired a babysitter last night, and went to see the new Avengers movie. You might not have heard of it, it's kind of obscure... (There will be some mild SPOILERS below; if you're intensely opposed to that sort of thing, don't read the rest of this...) So, I didn't realize it at the…
Despite generating a surprising number of comments with last week's burning question (thanks to Kate for the suggestion), we didn't actually go see X-Men III until yesterday afternoon. Short verdict: Not quite as bad as I was led to believe. The longer version is either on Kate's LiveJournal, or…
We haven't yet gotten to the point where we're comfortable leaving SteelyKid with a babysitter, so seeing the movie everybody's talking about took a while. Since she's off at Gammy's, though, we got a rare night to ourselves and went to the movies. My immediate reaction is that it's great to see a…
I go back and forth about the whole question of scientific accuracy in tv shows and movies. On the one hand, I think that complaining "Explosions don't make noise in space!" is one of the worst forms of humorless dorkitude, and I'm generally happy to let bad science slide by in the service of an…

I am just at the moment listening to the complete soundtrack, which is a marvelous piece of composition by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. I highly recommend it, and please do the music some justice... play it on a good sound system (your skin needs to feel it too!) ;-)
Can't wait to watch the movie!
