Miscellaneous Football Thoughts

A few more detailed comments on the games leading up to the Chateau Steelypips Showdown in two weeks:

  • The Patriots looked a little shaky, but again, I was never that worried that they would actually lose. Their defense isn't as intimidating as it was a few years ago, but they did enough to get the job done, holding the Chargers to nothing but field goals.
  • Tom Brady looked distinctly mortal, which probably had something to do with the lousy weather. He had a number of passes wobble in the air, and got picked off an astonishing three times, but still held it together well enough to score when they needed to.
  • That said, he's 100-26 as a starter, which is just preposterous.
  • Astonishingly, given the miserable weather, the Packers-Giants game was a well-played and entertaining game. Most of the famous bad-weather games (the Ice Bowl, the fog game between Philly and Chicago back in the 80's, last year's Super Bowl) are kind of plodding and uninteresting. Last night, both teams were passing the ball, and moving it pretty well.
  • Even more astonishingly, Eli Manning had the best game of any of the four quarterbacks in the conference championships-- 21-40, 254 yard, no interceptions. If you had said at the beginning of the year that Manning would outplay Brady, Favre, and Phillip Rivers on a random Sunday in October, let alone in the game before the Super Bowl, I would've laughed at you. But Eli gets Manning family bragging rights for the next little while.
  • I feel bad for Favre, and hope he comes back. I would've been perfectly happy to see the Giants lose to the Packers, if it allowed Favre another Super Bowl.
  • Not exactly the match-up the NFL was hoping for, I suspect, but it'll be big in the Northeast... Probably the lowest ratings ever in the South, though.

A handful of sports items of interest to me: 1) My Giants defied expectations, and pulled out a 21-16 win over the Bears on two late touchdown drives, after sucking for most of the game. Well, OK, the defense was good throughout, though they were aided by the Bears not having a quarterback better…
So, how much does it suck to be David Garrard? He was 22-for-33 for 278 yards, with two touchdowns and only one interception, an excellent performance by any normal standard, but he was the second-best quarterback in the game. Tom Brady was 26-for-28, 262 yards, three TD's, no interceptions. And…
My Giants fianlly got the chance to play a bad team today, and true to form almost honked a game to the Texans. They trailed in the fourth quarter, but rallied to win 17-14. Their bad play was a combination of being generally banged up (the defense was without Osi Umenyiora, Brandon Short, Sam…
I watched the game at a Super Bowl party hosted by some of our senior majors, because Kate didn't want to see it. Of course, the guys who hosted the party didn't have cable, so we were watching the game through a haze of static and swirly lines that made the weather look even worse than it was.…

Well the Buffalo Bills did play the NY Giants for an all NY Super Bowl and SF 49ers did play the SD Chargers for an all CA Super Bowl, so that might not be the case. There is the desire to watch history in the making to consider (or watch those dreams crumble depending on how you view the Pats) which may keep the ratings up.

The Giants deserve victory for their artful grinding the hopes and dreams of the Evil Dallas Cowboys underfoot. Also, sports commentators are annoying enough without having an undefeated team win the Super Bowl inflating their gaseous bloviations. We don't need that for the next ten years.

Of the people I know, Jets fans want the Giants to win more than Giants fans, just to mess up the Patriots perfect record.

I feel bad for Favre, and hope he comes back. I would've been perfectly happy to see the Giants lose to the Packers, if it allowed Favre another Super Bowl.

Your fan circuits are fried. Might have to get em checked.

Well, if I have to choose between the overachievers and the obnoxious cheaters, I'll go with the overachievers. Go Giants.
