Tree of SCIENCE!!! #5

I've been scanting the physics content so far with the Tree of SCIENCE!!! posts, so here's one from my own branch of science:

This one is a little Santa/ elf guy with a one-man-band rig, which of course stands for the venerable science of acoustics.

There's lots of great physics material in this one. The tone of the bell that he's carrying will be determined by resonance of sound waves inside the cavity of the bell, and the normal modes of waves on a drumhead is a rich and fascinating topic. The mathematics used to describe these situations is the same basic mathematical apparatus used to describe the propagation of classical light waves, and fairly similar to the basic equations of (non-relativistic) quantum mechanics.

So, let's hear it for acoustics in the Tree of SCIENCE!!!

Newton's birthday (in the Julian calendar) is Sunday, so we're in the final days of the advent calendar. Which means it's time for the equations that are least like anything Newton did, such as today's: This is the Schrödinger equation from non-relativistic quantum mechanics. If you want to…
The scare quotes in the title are to distinguish "Modern Physics" classes like the one I'm teaching this term from modern physics as a general subject, which, of course, all right-thinking people should study in depth. The question comes from a comment by Coriolis on last week's post about what "…
In the initial "Basic Concepts" post, I discussed the concept of Force in physics. This time out, I'll be talking about fields, which is a much dicier proposition. Not only are fields considerably more abstract than forces, but I've never lectured on fields in general (specific instances of fields…
One of my fellow SBers, Kevin over at Dr. Joan Bushwell's Chimpanzee Refuge wrote a scathing article reviewing an incredibly bad anti-evolution blog. There's no way that I can compete with Kevin's writing on the topic - you should really check it out for a great example of just how to take a…
