I'm still looking for charity suggestions to help prove that atheists aren't just cynical misers. Again, I'm offering to donate $200 to worthy non-religious charities suggested in comments. I've gotten some good suggestions already, but more are always welcome.
On a less serious note, nobody has yet taken me up on my offer to endorse any candidate who will play me one-on-one in basketball. I'm coming off a knee injury that sidelined me for a couple of weeks, so now's the time to act. I'll even sweeten the pot-- if you beat me (game to fifteen, make-it-take-it), I'll contribute to your campaign.
Hillary? Barack? Anybody? Mitt Romney, this is basically your only shot at getting a positive mention on ScienceBlogs-- are you going to pass that up?

But Chad, what if I AM a cynical miser?
What does that have to do with being an atheist?
It's not like there aren't plenty of religious types that fit the description...
Im sure The Queen Puppy would appreciate you donating to a local animal charity in her name.
There are lots of rescue groups set up specifically for dogs hard to adopt out-- pits/AmStaffs, Great Danes, Mastiffs. Then there are local free/low cost fixing clinics. No-kill shelters. Donations of pet food to local food banks (pets have to eat too) or your vet for needy families with pets.
Come to think of it, Ive never had a problem finding a nonreligious animal charity.
Look at Kiva.org
Dude, you're probably not going to out-compete the religious folks in this area. A lot of the religious folks I know tithe, i.e., donate a tenth of their income.
I don't know any secular types that would consider that.
Hi Chad, if some day you come to Mexico City (or I go wherever you live), I'll be willing to play basketball against you. I'm not a politician, I'm just a physics student. Saludos!
Nonreligious charities? Let's see...
To start with, there's The Nature Conservancy. I believe Ducks Unlimited also takes donations. Audubon Society or Sierra Club (neither of which I particularly like, but you didn't ask for _good_ charities, just nonreligious ones ;-) ) will also do. Local nature centers or museums, which frequently run on the edge of bankruptcy. Kennel clubs - $200 would be enough to sponsor a nice prize at a dog show. Animal rescue groups -- dog, cat, horse are the common ones. Private animal shelters.
The other one that came to mind is one that I'd be contributing to if I had any money: VALOUR-IT, Voice Activated Laptops for OUR Injured Troops. This is a privately run charity that buys inexpensive laptop PCs, loads them with voice-recognition software, and gives them to injured soldiers and Marines who have lost the use of their hands.
