We're having our very first snowfall of the new winter. It's kind of comforting to see, but a) my wife has an hour long commute each weekday, and b) this usually marks the descent of the region into the deep freeze for the next 4-6 months.

Just over a week ago, I re-ran a post "How Not to Freeze" about what to do if you don't have central heating in the winter in cold places. I was fascinated by the responses I got from people who by necessity and desire were living with minimal heat.
My assumption about "how not to freeze" was…
Since today is Blog Action Day, it seems like a good day for a post I've been meaning to write for a while now - what my family is doing to reduce our impact on the environment, and what else we can (and should) add to the mix.
I should probably admit right off the bat that I'm not doing…

The last month or so I've been pondering what to photograph, as I walk around town, to convey the disturbing wierdness of the weather we've had these last months in Vermont. I live…
"Did you look at the forecast?" "Is this it?" "Should we get them out?"
My children keep asking, and I keep telling them that I think so, but that no one can know for sure. We are talking of the change in the weather, slated to begin today, warming us up from the last wave of bitter cold with…
At least you don't live in England PZ. Raining cats and dogs here, as it does for approximately 94.782% of the time. :o)
I could just go for a snowball fight right now.
It is currently 34 degrees celcius at 1am, oh how I envy your frozen water at this time..
"Looks like she's gonna turn cold tomorrow."
"Oh ya. Got a front comin' in."
"Yeah, you got that right."
James F- Thanks for the link. It made me laugh! I hadn't watched Fargo for a long time.
At least PZ isn't living in one of the lake effect snow belts. There a 20% chance of snow likely means 2".
We're gearing up for a nice warm Australian summer where I am. :)
I want snow. Why can't it snow in Detroit MI too... I'm jealous.
England? The place is a desert compared to Ireland :o)
Christ! I hate global warming!
I would like some snow too, but the winters in Sweden have not been very... wintery lately.
Great, that means I'm next.
Happy winter, PZ.
I'm about 600 miles east of ya (in Michigan's UP) and we'll getting what's left of your snowstorm in a few hours.
A toast to living in the Upper Midwest!
Psshht. You Minnesotans are weak! Us Utahns had ours two weeks ago!
You don't get much more Upper than the UP. First snow about now, sticks after Turkey day, and there until April. (I lived there for a few years.)
At #10: Aye, winters have been a bit un-wintery in Finland too.
I used to boast that the only natural richness Finland has an endless supply of is snow, but it seems we have to consider importing some soon.
Sigh.
Americans, you could help: how does a nuclear winter sound to you? Please? Pretty please?
You should totally hibernate.
In Kansas City, we're more likely to get ice, and what fender crushing fun will ensue! BTW, these might get through what passes for mild winter weather up in Frostbite falls, http://aebike.com/page.cfm?action=details&PageID=30&SKU=TR5261 , studded bicycle tires.
Please! This is a family blog!
Also raining here. Quite badly, even. And I just realised I shoulda mended my bike. Bugger.
And of course as the poet Henrik Nordbrandt (I think) said: "The Danish year has sixteen months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, November, November, November, November, December."
A few years ago I adopted the policy that it can't s.... sss... ...snow.. until December.
Anything before that is fluffy rain.
Now shut up about the "s" word.
So, PZ, the commute should stop that pesky snow any day now, what with global warming and all. Think globally, act locally!
81° F in Houston right now. Brrrrr. Now where did I put my only sweater...?
It snowed for the first time here as I was going to work the other day. Nothing makes a half-hour uphill commute on bicycle at 4:30 in the morning better than having it start to snow on you. Ugh.
The suns shining bright here today(midwest),However the wind has eery feeling. Halloween must be approaching, no snow tho.
Am I glad I am no longer in the Midwest! We had a gorgeous summer day in San Francisco yesterday and the sun is slowly coming out again today. Of course, we got freaking cold Julys here thanks to that darn fog...
A law was made a distant moon ago here:
July and August cannot be too hot.
And there's a legal limit to the snow here
In Camelot.
The winter is forbidden till December
And exits March the second on the dot.
By order, summer lingers through September
In Camelot.

HA! In Boise, we beat your first snowfall by over two weeks!
Utah? Minnesota? Michigan? Bah! Johnny come lates! Here in Fairbanks, AK, we've had snow stuck on the ground for about a month, now! Come back when you hit -25C, then you've got winter started.

Sounds like a good day to make french pumpkin soup, and sit by the fire.
We all know you aren't headed out to church. *snrk*
Ohhh...great - now I'm going to hafta go rent 'Fargo' - again. Thanks, James. (walking away muttering, kicking shit...)
We had our first snow two weeks ago, smack dab in 'rush hour' traffic. It was beautiful, really. Two days later it was almost 80. Today 60s.
Yu get snw, we get hurricains
I'm in Dubai, where it was over 30deg Celsius today. Phthbbt.
Of course, if I want I can take the elevator to the ground floor, walk thirty seconds, and see snow. Hooray, indoor ski slope. What a country :D
KC, you top the UP on cold. The lake Superior snow belt can average a couple of hundred inches of snow, so they may have you beat there. Keep warm.
Patricia, the Redhead made a big batch of cabbage soup a couple of days ago. I'd be happy to share with PZ, but I live a couple of states away.
@speedwell;Hows that tallest tower project in Dubai coming along?
Cold, wet, snow, nasty, slick, dark?
Yep, and right on time, too. See, it happens every year about this time. On this half of the planet.
Now, where did I put them long handled drawers?
. . . shiver . . .
Warm and sunny here in SoCal - 75F at the beach in Marina del Rey, CA. Why do people live in the frozen North?
Sunny and 82 here in San Antonio. And I'm sick of it. I'd ask to have some of the snow sent down here, but I can just imagine these fools trying to drive in it.
I love adding to PZs weather misery LOL
Here in Melbourne its somewhat murky today, but 25ish overnight, and definetely heading for a hot summer this year, already had a few days over 30 this early in the year.
I used to live in Winnipeg, so I empathize with you. Settle in for a long, cold one. And sharpen your ice skates.
The thermal long underwear just appeared in our local stores! Hooray. I managed to get some this year. Last year I was too late, and they sold out before I could purchase any. Once the small town stores run out, at least around here, they don't reorder until the following year.
Poor ol' PZ.
Today it was lovely in my part of Oregon. Sweet sunshine, and only a long sleeved shirt needed. My pullets were content and frisky. We picked the French pumpkins. The black kale is beautiful just now, and ready for some stir fry. The leeks are coming on fine, and it's time to plant the garlic and Egyptian Walking onions.
Poor PZ. *smirk* Rubbin' it in awful, aren't we!
There is now a cold wind coming from the north, the house is creaking as the tempature drops.
P.Z. what have you done...close the door...is that snow,no not yet,we have to have frost on the pumpkin first.
Now Crudely Wrott, be careful.
In the mentioning of drawers, you touch on the subject of ladies winter unmentionables.
And are you qualified to state that, silk, quilted, or thermal pantelettes, corset covers, and petticoats are one, warmer than the other - by personal experience? Or are you going by a warmth rating listed in the LL Bean catalog?
Inquiring minds want to know.
The Lich King is coming! We will all travel to Northrend to destroy it.
PIctures, I want pictures...
Yeah, but first we have to clean up all the zombies in Outland.
It was like, 95 yesterday and I think we're going to have more of the same today. WHERE IS FALL, ARIZONA, WHERE IS FALL?!
Really, though, 95 is quite nice. Warm but not hot. Our evenings and nights have been amaaaaazing.
OMG I'm loving this zombie event. Did you notice the Scarlet Crusade has set up shop in Shatt?
How much of a dork am I that I know you are talking about WoW and I don't even play it?
*jealous*
Here in SoCal, I won't see snow unless I travel for it.
