I have just walked outside in Morris, Minnesota, and you may not believe this, but there is liquid water falling from the sky. I even spotted an absence of coats, and someone rollerblading. Have I been magically transported to some tropical paradise, like Portland, Oregon?

It's that time when universities get on their knees and beg the state for continuing support (hey, isn't that all the time?), and my colleague Pete Wyckoff gave some testimony at the Minnesota capitol the other day. It's good stuff that summarizes the financial dilemma students are facing…
Living in paradise, the Pacific Northwest, has probably spoiled her, so it's good that Mother Nature is preparing for her visit. Right now, Minnesota is looking horribly bedraggled and grubby — we've been thawing, slowly, over the last few weeks, so the snowpack burying us has diminished by a foot…
The University of Minnesota, Morris is hiring! We need someone to teach an undergraduate course in classical transmission genetics for the spring semester — I know, it's short notice, and this is only a temporary position, but it would be ideal for someone who wants to pick up some teaching…
It appears that the Chancellor of the University of Minnesota, Morris put out a statement today regarding PZ Myers' recent activity in relation to the cracker/eucharist. This led to coverage in the Star Tribune where you can, if you like, leave a comment. The story:

Karana be praised!
And it was snowing here today....
I freaked out last week when I heard birds singing.
Foo. Still pretty cold here in VT.
On my way (bicycling) to work this morning, on the Hawthorne bridge, here in Portland, OR, I remembered what a great thing we have here.
At 8:45am, there were 5-7 bikes ahead of me on the bridge, and another 5-7 bikes behind me.
I suppose you could commute in rollerblades, too. Haven't tried it yet.
[sigh]
Keep it out of your mouth. I heard it's gods pee.
Snowing here in Quebec :(.
Calgary has been like that for some time. It's been absolutely beautiful outside and I've been doing some mountain biking.
SCIENTISTIFIC _PROOF_ of Globalisic Warmming in teh interwebs!
Don't get your hopes up. It's supposed to nearly hit 50 everyday for the rest of the week, but they are predicting snow for the weekend.
I might still break out the rollerblades as a chance of transportation routine. They've been gathering dust since November.
Yep, it's pretty nice in Portland today -- sky could be a bit more blue, but hey, it'll come in time.
More alarmingly, though, a few days ago I got an email from my mother, who lives in North Mississippi, just south of Memphis. Attached was photographic proof of... snowfall. Six inches of it. In Mississippi. In March.
That's not supposed to happen.
Uh-oh. Looks like the global warming is back!
I know what you mean - after a brief reprieve this past weekend, I had to turn the AC back on yesterday...
March is a good time to live in Florida
Yeah, PZ, I bet you think that heavy water just naturally goes into the heavens and then falls onto earth. You atheists worship chance, don't you?
Only intelligence can raise water up from the earth to let it irrigate the land. Any idiot can see that. Why don't you just wave your hand over the Columbia River to make it water the nearby vineyards, if your going to believe in such unintelligent nonsense?
I see agriculturalists having to pump water out of the rivers. Since it takes intelligence to do that, I know that the Great Designer is responsible for it actually raining in Morris MN. You want to think it all "just happens" because you don't want to obey the Designer responsible for your rain.

UChicagoNerdette: 50? get into centigrade, man. An easy scale to understand...
-20 to -10 you're in canada
-10 to 0 you're freezing
0 to 10 cold
10 to 20 ok, bearable
20 to 30 warm to hot
30+ roasting hot
50+ you are in Egypt in midsummer
@Tom,
Actually this year in Canada it's been nice, barely any -20. -10 to 0 would be better.
Here in Central Illinois, Mary is hanging about 100 feet over head. I've wisely decided to avert my eyes.
No, there is no liquid water falling out of the sky in Portland today... I can actually see some patches of blue sky out of my window...
If anyone has the right to believe in resurrection, it's a Minnesotan. The return of colors and smells is a mystical experience. And happens every year. Well...so far.
I know! Madison WI is melting as I type, for the third day in a row. It's in the upper 30s right now, and it's freaking toasty! I'll have to take off half of my layers just to keep from sweating.
So this is what Spring is like. I've never seen it - California, as you well know, is one perpetual sunny day. From border to border. 24/7.
(Well I hear L.A. is a bit like that, but not norcal)
Poo. Still snowy here in Pittsburgh.
PZ,
What's really going to blow your mind is that we've had defined moments of SUN, here in Washington, IN FEBRUARY.
Geese a flyin' north here in sw Iowa! Birds a chirpin' for a couple of weeks and oh! I saw a Robin the other day! Sixty three degrees today, sixty seven yesterday and a little bit o' green a pokin' through in the lawn!!
Cheers!
How dare you question that all-knowing groundhog? Would we give that blessed rodent its own day if it weren't infallible? Go back inside and wait for spring, you heretic!
Reports of excessive rainfall in Portland have been greatly exaggerated, or at least premature. Since we moved here in January, it has been sunny at least half the time.
Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles from whence we moved, they have had record rainfalls.
But I lived in Minnesota for ten years, and I know about that first day when it isn't soul-crushingly cold. It's almost worth suffering through winter to get to. Almost.
@Tom
Heh, I'm proud of myself for being able to thing in both the 'American' and metric systems of length, whereas my engineering finance compulsively converts temperatures to Kelvin. Baby steps.
I'm jealous...here in Melbourne we're looking forward to about a week of temperatures around 35-40 degrees...CELSIUS. Arghhhhhhhhh
(I think that's about 100-110F. Not nice.)
For My Sake. I'ts about time you took notice of one of my signs. I tell you, I was but a smite away from sending out the thunderbolts. Now will you finally get down on your heathen knees and PRAY ALREADY!!
wow, didn't realize there were so many locals from ptown that read these forums. se 20th and burnside, respec!
I'm still in Saskatoon and it has been fairly warm here too. It's 40F/+5C (better, Tom?) today and the snow is almost gone. Nice but I'd still rather be in the Chicago area. We have many small melts there, there are a lot of huge puddles and the alley that I can see out of the window is a bit of a river.
Doop-dee-doop, just checked the weather for Dallas this week. High of 32 degrees...Celsius. Though to be honest, I fully expect violent sand storms, torrential rains, and at least one more bout of icy roads within the coming couple of weeks. I would not be altogether surprised to get all three, plus the 32-C, all in the same day.
This is Texas, where a degree in meteorology is roughly equal to a roll of scratch-off lottery tickets, especially in spring.
HA! It didn't even rain here in Portland today (but it's supposed to real soon).
Teh global warmings hit Denver today too. An ice cream truck just went by. DST evilness.
Ah, Egypt, where rain is so rare that it was once called "Nile from heaven".
And the Euphrates was called "the river that flows in reverse" because, as everyone knows, water flows from south to north.

No snow any time in winter here in Paris. Oceanic climate sucks.
It's raining for about the 6th time in 3 days. Did I mention that oceanic climate sucks?
You are actually farther south .. in tropical Eugene, where liquid fell from the sky multiple times today.
Count yourself lucky you've had winter. It's been feeling like November since, well, November here.
I grew up in LA. It's either sunny and hot, or sunny and cool. Unless you live in Santa Monica (or other beach towns) where we have six months of (yes, one word) 'latenightandearlymorninglowclouds' aka FOG. At 17 blocks from the ocean I could gauge what time of day it was. Kind of. This time of year if I could see across the street it was after 10:00AM. If at night I couldn't it was after 2100 hours. This shifted with the calender.
I now live in the Seattle area. This time of year if the clouds are whitish instead of all steely grey I must wear sunglasses. The light it burns!
If I visit my brother in Yakima when it is raining here in Kent, I put on those damn sunglasses at the top of Snoqualimie pass and don't take them off until I go back across. Even at night, it's Eastern Washington, Pat Robertson country, its' better that way.
Try London. It's got storms.
I was outside all day working in the garden, in a tee-shirt. . . . I don't know about the tropics but, Yup, Portland and the Willamette Valley come close to paradise.
The real shocker is the ≥100°F dry summer weather in Portland.
@Tom
FINLAND
a guide to temperatures (Celsius/Fahrenheit)
below -20C/-4F : Winter (a good one)
around -10C/14F : Winter (but not a good one)
around 0C/32F : Warm late winter day (no hat needed)
around 10C/50F : Spring or early summer (t-shirts and sunglasses)
around 20C/68F : Midsummer (so warm people start to complain)
around 30C/86F : Freakish unnatural heatwave (sacrifices to the winter gods restart)
over 30C/86F : A bad dream or a badly warmed sauna (lots of swearing, people run around naked and bothered)
over 90C/194F : A proper sauna (good), or a sauna on fire (not good)
I noticed yesterday that the swallows have returned to Naples, Italy. The predicted high today is 64F.
And I thought that it was just us Brits who were obsessed by the weather!
:-)
Last weekend here in SW Ohio it was near blizzard conditions that paralyzed everything. Today will be in the 50s, snow melting fast, tree buds swelling, early plants popping up and all. Yup, spring is springing up all over the place. Course, it happens every year about this time.
Welcome, Spring! Welcome.
this is the apocalypse...
Well, it is raining down here in the Willamette Valley, but up on Mt. Hood they're supposed to get a foot of the white stuff today.
this is the apocalypse...
'bout time.
*looks outside*
oh, you liar!
Couldn't possibly be Portland, OR -- I bought something today and it had sales tax on it! (Another Minnesotan that used to live in that tropical paradise)
I don't really believe that Minnesota exists. It's just a story Southern parents tell their children to keep them from misbehaving. "Be good or you get sent to Minnesota!" Canada is for thr REALLY bad kids.
It was soooooo nice when I got to DC today. Not "sit on a balcony and write" warm, but I dont have a balcony...
