Regular transmissions to resume shortly

As you can probably tell from the last two "photos of the day", I'm back from Utah. It was a wonderful trip, but I have been too swamped with other projects/commitments to get this blog back up to speed. Regular blog entries will resume soon.

After reading S.J. Gould's Dinosaur in a Haystack while in transit to and from the beehive state, however, I started to reconsider what this blog is meant to be. Specifically, I am thinking of writing higher-quality essays less often than simply trying to feed this blog every weekday. This will be an experiment (Laelaps is, after all, a writing lab first and foremost), but I am hoping to get back to developing my writing and stop fretting over simply providing new content each day. Thank you for sticking with me during the transition.

Things have been a little slow around here this week, but for good reason. As you might expect I have been hard at work on my first book, Written in Stone. It is a challenge, but the process has its own little rewards, and I am putting the majority of my effort into making it the best book that I…
On the 31st of May, 1984, the late evolutionary theorist John Maynard Smith appraised the field of paleontology in the journal Nature. The report was a critical summary of a series of lectures Stephen Jay Gould had given at Cambridge, and Gould considered it "the kindest and most supportive…
The time has come to wrap-up this blog series, but there was one other topic I wanted to cover before concluding; how do you let people know about the mass of ink-blotted, dead tree pulp that is your book? Promoting Written in Stone will be a tough job. When it hits shelves this fall it will…
Blogs, as Carl Zimmer astutely noted at this year's ScienceOnline conference, are software. Despite all the hand-wringing over whether science bloggers can or should replace science journalists the fact of the matter is that science blogs are the independent expressions of a variety of writers…

Brian, for what it's worth, I enjoy less frequent, in-depth essays compared to a more constant stream.

I tend to follow blogs that have about 2-3 posts/week simply due to the amount of time I can devote to reading online. But that's just me ... everyone is different.

Looking forward to more of your writing.
