The Fashion Of Science

Unless you've been on a desert island for the past few months, you've likely heard about Isis The Scientist; one of ScienceBlogs best new additions. Dr. Isis a physiologist who blogs about balancing her research career with the demands of raising small children, succeeding as a woman in academia, and shoes. In fact, her arrival sent a shockwave of shoes across the blogosphere, inspiring even the most unusual suspects to ponder the pump. So here's my contribution to the mix... These arrived Friday:

i-5601c216af00e030c2af648267056ab8-AAAS shoes.jpgI'll be featuring them prominently at this year's annual AAAS meeting in Chicago where I'm part of a symposium called The Science of Kissing on Valentine's Day. We'll discuss how and why humans kiss and the chemical, neural, and psychological pathways involved. Panelists include V. S. Ramachandran, Wendy L. Hill, Donald Lateiner, Sarah Woodley, and Helen Fisher. Organized by Al Teich and Jill Pace, The Science of Kissing should be a stimulating session.

And so readers (paging Dr. Isis), do you think these classic black pumps will compliment an elegant red dress? I wonder what Jennifer, Joshua, and Andrew will wear...

I'm posting this on Sheril's behalf, as she is in the hospital right now: Dear readers and friends in and out of the blogosphere, I am extremely appreciative for so many emails during the past week. Thanks for offering your guestrooms, travel recommendations, and road trip advice. Thank you for…
When Dr. Isis first joined ScienceBlogs, she attracted attention with her bombastic commentary, gravity-defying shoes and a persona that steamrolled the stereotypical image of the safety goggle-wearing white male scientist. Those who oppose her are immediately forced to face their preconceived…
By the time this post publishes, I'll be on the open road somewhere between the Atlantic and Pacific.  I'm leaving NC a couple months to circle the states for meetings, talks, and some fun along the way.  Stopping soon at UT Austin before heading west to USC where I'm looking forward to catching…
Photo source. Kisses are a better fate than wisdom. {e. e. cummings} Just in time for Valentine's Day! The Science of Kissing is Everywhere. {NPR, NBC's The Today Show, Time, Newsday...} Kissing is one of the most intimate things we do. What does it mean? This post is worth bringing back…

Sheril, those are absolutely divine!!! Surely your asking if they will compliment your red dress is some show of false modesty though because the answer can only be "of course!" The toe and heel on those are amazing!

HOT shoes! Hope to catch them in February. Sound like a terrific symposium!

Those shoes are gorgeous classic black pumps. Yes, they'll go with that red dress! The classic look is very versatile. Thus "classic".

Miss Sheril,
Red and I agree- they are good for you and will do your dress justice. Of course, I think you could pull off half gone Keds and a red dress, but I may be biased.

Hey,

The shoes look great. But I've just gotta ask--and this is from a purely professional point of view--how does one get to be a scientific expert on kissing? I mean, how was the panel selected, if you don't mind my asking? What, exactly, qualify as kissing credentials? And lastly, will there be any demonstrations?

Lovely black pumps, although I'm partial to the black Dior pumps I purchased for my wedding... really, the only time one can justify spending such a ridiculous amount of money on shoes. As for AAAS -- I have gorgeous gray suede booties that would look awesome, but weather is likely to put them at risk. Hmmm. Maybe my knee-high cobweb designed Goth rocker boots with stiletto heels would be a more practical choice... :)
