Smith, Sununu and Collins are just about the last 3 moderate Republicans left in the Senate.. or at least of those who are running this time. With them gone, I forsee a period of increase partisanship and vicious infighting in the Senate, forestalling real efforts at progress.

David Brooks expressed this opinion in conversation with Charlie Rose last Friday, and I have to agree with him. Change, if it happens, will only happen slowly.
