You Know Your Senator Is Getting Desparate When...

..she releases the most ridiculous negative campaign ad in history:

The commercial comparing Kay Hagan to a dog was pretty bad, but now Elizabeth Dole is accusing a Sunday school teacher of being 'godless' with a fake voice over at the end. This is not politics. It surpasses bad judgment and I'm embarrassed for my state.

Politico reports (via Benen): Sen. Elizabeth Dole’s latest advertisement suggests her Democratic opponent, Kay Hagan, is a godless heathen. “A leader of the Godless Americans PAC recently held a secret fundraiser for Kay Hagan,” the 30-second spot says, showing footage of the group’s members…
I am sure that you have already heard about the despicable TV ad that Elizabeth Dole aired against Kay Hagan. You probably heard about it online, perhaps on Twitter or FriendFeed or blogs. Here's a quick selection: My godless money. Take it or leave it. The Worst Insult of All? Thou shalt not bear…
Every time I see the disregard the Democratic party shows for secular values — which is painfully frequent — I wonder why the heck I'm even voting for these addled con artists. But then the Republicans remind me by showing up and being even worse. The latest is from the Elizabeth Dole campaign in…
As far as I can tell, North Carolina's no different from the rest of America when it comes to religion. About a tenth of the population is free of religious conviction. That's not a big slice, but it could, in theory, be big enough to cost Sen. Elizabeth Dole her re-election this November, if…

wow. am speechless.

I was raised in NC. That stuff is par for the course. Or do you not remember Jess Helms threatening Bill Clinton's safety after he won the presidency?

You know, I'm pretty upset for this (on Hagan's behalf), but I'm also a little miffed at the response--latest I've heard is that Hagan is suing for libel and defamation of character, since Dole won't take the commercial off the air. I'm offended that 'godless' is taken to be such a slur.

Of course, I've also already voted (for Hagan), so all this is moot for me.

Cowabunga. She's crazier than Cratering John, but I think there's that same basic mean streak.

Kay Hagan responded with a very powerful retort ad directed at Elizabeth Dole. The people of North Carolina aren't stupid or naive, and this is bound to backfire on Dole.

Ashamed for your state?

You know what happened the last time someone said that, don't you?

They had all their CD's trashed, with steam rollers.

But hey, at least you don't have Joe Blabberman as your Senator.

Now that's really embarrassing -- and lasts more than just one election cycle, unfortunately.

The Republican strategy is now incorporating lying to stupid people more and more with every election.

Not only attacking someone for being an atheist, but having to lie in order to do it -- well, as an atheist, it makes me feel like shit.
