Investigation concludes CRU emails were stolen not leaked.

Hopping down the bunny trail comes the (not) surprising news that law enforcement investigating the CRU email scandal (aka Climategate, aka Swifthack) have concluded that the email servers were hacked and this is not the imagined whistle blower the WUWT and Curry crowd like to pretend.  Though they can not identify the perp, they do conclude that:

“However, as a result of our enquiries, we can say that the data breach was the result of a sophisticated and carefully orchestrated attack on the CRU’s data files, carried out remotely via the internet. The offenders used methods common in unlawful internet activity to obstruct enquiries.

“There is no evidence to suggest that anyone working at or associated with the University of East Anglia was involved in the crime.”

Details at DesmogBlog.  Yes, it was a crime.

Climate gate involved the criminal theft of computer based data from University of East Anglia (UEA) researchers by global warming deniers. According to Julian Gregory ,Detective chief superintendent, "the data breach was the result of a sophisticated and carefully orchestrated attack" and that…
One thing the blogosphere is good for is spirited discussion and fast dissemination of news stories. One thing it is not good for is the old addage "where there's smoke, there's fire". The recent "swifthacking" of CRU email (aka "climategate") is a great example of tremendous amounts of smoke…
I use the term "climategate" reluctantly because the stolen climatology email story has little in common with Watergate. Those who would deny the physical reality of climate change seem to have latched onto the meme, however, and it is my sad news to report that the essence of the meme, if not that…
If you do not know what climategate refers to you probably got here via some odd typo in a google search. If you do but have not yet read Real Climate's post on it, you should do so. It is too late to rename the whole affair, but I thing "Swifthack" would have been more apropos. Climategate is…

Firstly, good to see you back up and posting again coby. It's been quiet for a while, but I guess you have your priorities as well!

Secondly, this piece would have to be - as the say in the UK - a 'statement of the bleeding obvious'. The e-mails stolen?! Well, go figure!

And I think it's probably a reasonable approach by the relevant authorities to terminate their investigation as they have done. It would be difficult to track down the culprits, and in the end not a lot would be served by catching them. Just the fact that it has been positively confirmed as theft is sufficient IMO. Of course, I don't expect anyone in the alternative denier universe to be critical of the thieves - like they were all over Peter Gleick. One of the hallmarks of deniers is that they are hypocrites - which is pretty much one of the worst attributes anyone can possess.

You note that despite this being killed off for the same reason as the ICO officer stated (not as the official) the CRU investigation, there is nothing about how this is proof there was a criminal act, but that the statute of limitations had run out so it can't be "proved".
