Rights and Privileges

Rights are cute ideas. Rights aren't rights at all if someone can take them away. 'God-given rights' are due to the god excuse: if god really gave you rights, he would have given you the right to have food every day and a roof over your head. But god is not (obviously!) taking care of you at all.

Thanks for posting these. I hadn't seen much of Carlin's stand-up. I guess he just never got the TV exposure in the UK, which is a bit of a shame.

Nor sure why any God should be expected to grant the right to food or shelter?

Seems to be saying that a God should grant the rights we would like to have and enforce them. Then because we obviously don't all have these things that's either the Gods fault or that there isn't a God.

No one ever said that a God had to be nice.

If I recollect there was something about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Then something along the lines of "liberty or death". Though that may be a constitution or somesuch.

Hope that you're enjoying yourself in Germany.

Great stuff. Carlin always had his head in the right place.

So, Chris, God is by nature nasty? That's what your saying? Your god must be an asshole.

The "right to life, liberty, and Pursuit of happiness" was initially "life liberty and pursuit of property". But they realized property isn't a right, so they changed it up to make it sound nice.

The guys who made that decision forgot to use the same thought process to the first two.

Oops.

The Liberty or death thing was Hyperbole on the part of a man who never once fired a shot in anger in the war he wanted. And it was a speech not in the constitution.

Great viddy, thanks for posting!
