"How does one distinguish a truly civilized nation from an aggregation of
barbarians? That is easy. A civilized country produces much good bird
literature."
--Edgar Kincaid

The Birdbooker Report is a special weekly report of a wide variety of science, nature and behavior books that currently are, or soon will be available for purchase. This report is written by one of my Seattle birding pals and book collector, Ian "Birdbooker" Paulsen, and is edited by me and published here for your information and enjoyment. Below the fold is this week's issue of The Birdbooker Report which lists ecology, environment, natural history and bird books that are (or will soon be) available for purchase.

New and Recent Titles:

  1. Turvey, Samuel. Witness to Extinction: How we failed to save the Yangtze River Dolphin. 2009. Oxford University Press. Paperback: 234 pages. Price: $16.95 U.S. [Amazon: $16.95]. SUMMARY: The author chronicles the extinction of the Baiji or Yangtze River Dolphin of China. Turvey took part in the survey of the Yangtze in 2006 which discovered this species was extinct. I just wish all recently extinct species could be documented like this so that we can learn from our mistakes. GrrlScientist comment: I would love to read and review this book on my blog.
  2. Scott, Eugenie C. Evolution vs. Creationism: An Introduction (Second Edition). 2009. University of California Press. Paperback: 352 pages. Price: $22.95 U.S. [Amazon: $15.61]. SUMMARY: This easy to understand book explains the evolution vs. creationism debate. This edition, which has been revised and updated, includes a new chapter, "Testing Intelligent Design and Evidence Against Evolution in the Courts (chapter 7)." If you want one handy reference on this debate, I recommend this book!

You can read all the Birdbooker Reports in the archives on this site, and Ian now has his own website, The Birdbooker's Bookcase, where you can read his synopses about newly published science, nature and animal books. But Ian assures me that he still loves us here, so he'll still share his weekly Birdbooker Reports with us!
