What Happened to Gmail?

My gmail account has been completely inaccessible for more than 24 hours now, and I have been able to access it only sporadically during the previous three days. In short, any time I try to access my gmail account, I get a white screen that reads;

Bad Request

Error 400

Am I the only one this is happening to? Does anyone know what is happening with gmail and how long this will continue into the future? I mean, there are some emails on my account that are very important, such as those from my upcoming conference that I cannot respond to, for example .. *panic*

Worse, there is NO WAY to contact the gmail people about this problem, and their help pages are extremely unhelpful.

It isn't possible to adequately describe what a long military deployment is like for those left behind, but I'm going to try anyway. I haven't seen a problem, though I don't access it constantly throughout the day (not one of my primary email accounts).

Though I did run across an article on slashdot that Google is dropping IE6 support on gmail -- you aren't using IE6, are you?

I've been checking mine frequently and its been slow but working ok.

Mine is working fine too. If you are still having this problem and are not using IE6 then I suggest, as a temporary fix, that you set your POP3 email client to pick up your Gmail for you - the server is pop.gmail.com on port 995 and smtp.gmail.com on port 25

Mine has been out since Thurs. eve--1-1

Mine has been working fine. As an aside, this kind of shit is one of the reasons I refuse to use free Web services for mission critical purposes. The terms of service basically say, "We can bend you over and fuck you in the ass without any lube, and there's not a damn fucking thing you can do about it". If Google decided to delete your entire Gmail account and all your archived e-mails, there would be absolutely *nothing* you could do about it.

I keep all my mission critical e-mails archived on my own physical machine.

My gmail has been working fine right now, but I have occasionally had days where logging into gmail (or using other google services) was well-nigh impossible. But service was usually restored sooner than in your case. Maybe it's just a single server that needs fixing?

You could try clearing cache and cookies, or try access from a different browser to see if it's a local rather than a server problem.

I am using Firefox Mozilla 3.0 and it happens to me! It started 2 days ago. I went back to 2.0 and it didn't happen, but my anti-virus software says it is dangerous. The mail worked though. But I went back to 3.0 and i get that damned message again! So I went back to 3.0. Still doesn't work and I get that darned message. I now have Safari as my default brower. GRRRRRR.

i think new browser software is my problem. i have a new laptop (four days old, yay) so i uploaded new browsers (safari and firefox) and now i can't read my gmail accounts. oddly, this access problem did not start right away, it took a couple days before it happened, so i never suspected it was the new browsers. this is a huge problem, yet there is no work-around that i am aware of, and i cannot contact anyone, either. gee, thanks, google!

okay, here's something that's even stranger: i CAN access my scienceblogs.com email account which is hosted by gmail! so how weird is this??

I don't know if you are still seeing the problem, but I'm having no trouble accessing Gmail with either Firefox 3.0.5 or Safari 3.1.2. If you are going to be using your new laptop (yay!) exclusively, you might consider setting up your mail program to download your Gmail via POP. That's what I usually do, and have had no problems with it, even when there are issues with the web interface.

(You can email me if you need help setting it up on what I assume is a Mac.)

Hopefully this has been resolved for you.

I maintain a 'backup' account at another web-based mail service where I CC my 'important' e-mails. Just as a back-up for situations like this.

i am experiencing the exact same problem and i'm scared, it has been about 16 hours...

YES! I just got in by downloading the latest mozilla and using it to open gmail. After reading #16's suggestions, I tried logging in to my husband's and my father's gmail - BOTH SAID THE SAME ERROR message! Thank god it's a browser issue. I think I'll do what #18 suggested and cc a backup email for the important stuff. good luck!
