This entry is for everyone who thinks that World Cup soccer (futbol) is not popular in the USA, think again: it's danged popular in Manhattan right now! At this moment, I am sitting in a pub, watching the USA-Italy game and there are at least 70 people crowded in here watching along with me, including three other women.
Needless to say, there is plenty of profanity here, especially after the two three missed USA goals and the one successful Italian goal. And there was plenty of cheering after the American goal and plenty more after Mastroeni De Rossie was kicked out of the game because he spilled some American blood with an elbow to the eyeball. That blood-letting certainly mobilized the American team, though, so it was a mistake on the part of the Italian team.
Oh, and that red card .. ? Malice?? I do NOT THINK So!! The stupid refs need glasses.

Well, while I've never been to any of the states, I'm told NYC is almost another country, so it doesn't count.
As for Mastroeni's red: aw, come on! He nearly chopped Pirlo's leg off!
Honey, as long as not every tv-show has soccer-related items, you are not drinking red-white-blue beer, getting soccer-related parafernalia with every damn thing you buy, coloring your pet red-white-blue or shopping in deserted malls in the middle of the day, then...... soccer is NOT popular in the USA :)
using that definition of "popular", the yankees aren't popular in NYC, either, and we all know that's JUST NOT TRUE.
but it's the biggest soccer crowd i've seen, and this is typical in NYC, since i've seen crowds for other (non-USA) games, played on weekdays, too. that's really good, methinks.
Mastroeni was the US player who got booted for supposedly tackling cleats up (bullshit.) De Rossie was the Italian player who got the red for elbowing McBride in the face.
