Dodos, rabbit poop, Mt. Rushmore and poker .. what more could you ask for than to make sense of the controversy regarding the teaching of so-called "intelligent design" versus evolution in science classrooms. To this end, the artistic community has teamed up with scientists to produce a film that explores strategies used by proponents of so-called "Intellegent Design" to confuse and mislead the general public about evolution.

The Bell Museum in Minneapolis is pulling out all the stops in the month of February, celebrating Darwin's birth month with an orgy of science and sex. I'm going to be there for the events on the 13th and 15th, and I'm really tempted by the talk on the 20th—I'll have to see if I can get away for…
A new documentary, Flock of Dodos, is now out. The auteur, Randy Olson, is an "evolutionary ecologist with a Ph.D. from Harvard University." But he's also from Kansas originally, and he has made a film that apparently heaps a fair amount of scorn on both sides of the evolution debate: "Flock of…

Really off topic, but I just noticed in you profile that you enjoy sailing. I spend a lot of time out on the lake sailing, also, and am happy to see I'm not the only sailor at ScienceBlogs!

When I lived in Seattle, I took sailing classes on Saturday and I would go sailboat racing every Tuesday evening. My motivation was become good enough to sail around the South Pacific islands where my research birds live. But after reading about the storm that Thor Heyerdahl and his colleagues encountered in the book, Kon Tiki, I became scared of ocean sailing adventures. Do you sail on the ocean?

No,
I sail on lakes (oceans are too far from where I live) but plan on ocean sailing at some point. I can relate to the bit about storms...

We belong to a sailing club that sail 'small' boats, but you are more than welcome to enjoy this with us. Let me know if you are coming to the Washington DC area.
