Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani will NOT be stoned to death. She will be hung by the neck until dead.

Which I take to be some kind of improvement.

Human rights advocates who felt that this resolution wasn't exactly what they were looking for have continued to fight on behalf of Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two. But according to the International Committee Against Stoning, Iranian authorities have given the green light for Ashtiani's execution to take place as early as tomorrow, November 3rd. And it's not clear what means they ended up deciding on to take her life, or if they're going to go ahead and stone her after all.

Well, maybe they will stone her.

A thirteen year old is brutally raped by three men. Since this constituted sexual relations outside of marriage, she was sentenced to death. She was buried in a hole up to her neck. She pleaded for her life. "Don't kill me. Don't kill me..." she cried. Then fifty men threw stones at her head…

Yesterday, I did a bit of navel gazing about how cranks, quacks, and antivaccinationists have a penchant for attacking skeptics at work in order to try to intimidate them into silence. Reading the post over again, I realize that it came across perhaps more whiny than it should have, but I guess I…

Cultures are equal! Would you like to impose the white man's cultural standards on the Iranians???
[noted the sarcasm?]

I signed, I doubt it will help.

Disgusting misogynistic subhuman savages. I know this is an ad hominum, but I am beyond caring.

Sailor, international pressure has been working on the Iranians. Somewhat.

Disgusting misogynistic subhuman savages.

I agree completely. Their behavior warrants it.

This has nothing to do with Iranian culture!
Cultural standards are thousand-year old precepts introduced to the rest of the world by a large portion of the Middle East including Iran.
The reasons behind the existence of the islamo-fascist government of Iran are numerous and America's profit-based foreign policy is one of them.
If things keep going like they are in the U.S now, you will see gays being hung by the religious right and the whole foundation of separation destroyed.

Look - this is bad, no doubt.

Saudi Arabia, a US ally, executes people for adultery by beheading. Pakistan (another US ally) more or less permits 'honor killings' by private individuals by essentially refusing to prosecute them. The US executes its poor and/or mentally handicapped (Teresa Lewis in September, for instance).

But Iran is just horrible because - well - they just are. I mean they aren't a US ally (at least not today).

A bit hypocritical - no?

A bit hypocritical - no?

I don't know how the media gods pick what cases to publicize but if they did publicize cases from these other countries, at times they have, you would see the same reaction from the same people. So people are consistent in their stand, at least from what I have seen.

Saudi Arabia, a US ally, executes people for adultery

Let me fix that for you:

Saudi Arabia, a US ally, executes WOMEN (mainly) for adultery

Minger,Saudi Arabia is every bit as uncivilized for its arcane and medieval behavior as Iran. The US should not have the death penalty at all. Do these facts mean that Iran is off the hook?

No, its does not leave Iran off the hook. Iran is a country with a lot of great decent people run by vile fundamentalist despots who should and will be dealt with.

Iran is also a country which used to be a US vassle state and which, under the Shah, committed all kinds of horrific crimes against its citizens. It was let off the hook then, because, well, they we butt buddies.

Iran's real crime (today), from the US perspective is pursuing a nuclear program, which may or may not lead to nuclear weapons. Only superpowers are allowed nukes, you see, because it keeps the vassels in line. Under this guise the war drums have been beating and I figure its pretty much a done deal the US will attack yet another sovreign country and kill tens or hundreds of thousand of unarmed civilians (but in a nice way).

And thats why this story may the USA Today and the NY Times and probably Oprah for all I know.

Pretty much, killing innocent people is wrong and maybe most of the time killing guilty ones may be wrong too. But helping to beat the war drum. Thats real wrong all the time.
