There is no racism in America. People are not excluded from jobs or not allowed admission to a school because of the color of the skin. The whole racism thing is over, solved, kaput, no longer an issue. You'all can go home now. Especially if you live in Texas and/or are concerned with Social Studies curriculum. ...
Peter Morrison is on a Texas State Board of Education panel set up to help revise state standards in Social Studies And he's trying to do a lot of work in this position. He's trying to edumicate us all on how racism is pretty much passe, and at the same time, he's trying to make the point that this black boy pretending to be president is stepping out of line.
Regarding President Obama's speech to the school children of last week:
"Obama's speech contained plenty of propaganda, in both what was said and what was omitted. He told kids that they may face road blocks, such as discrimination. Really? It makes me wonder which kids he's speaking to, because I'm not sure of where in America minorities are facing discrimination in employment or education. What company won't hire non-whites? What schools won't accept minorities? What banks makes loan decisions on skin color?"
Let me reiterate. These are the words of a man specifically put on the school board committee to revise social studies standards. In actual schools. In Texas.
But wait, there is more...
"Obama didn't mention the fact that he's in favor of racial discrimination against the white students listening. He has already appointed a Supreme Court justice who is a big fan of racial preferences for non-whites and will no doubt make the problem even worse from the high court. Obama has made it clear he intends to do much, much more to expand affirmative action, racial quotas, and other anti-white discrimination."
These colored people really do stick together, it would seem.
The above is just an extension of the post-Civil Rights resentment we see among working and middle class white southern Yahoos like Mr. Peterson and South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson. From the TFN:
These right-wing critics have repeatedly complained about "multiculturalism" and what they see as an "overrepresentation of minorities" in the social studies standards. Some have even demanded that historical figures who did so much to advance the cause of civil rights for the poor and minorities -- people like Cesar Chavez and Thurgood Marshall -- should be removed from the standards because they are "poor role models" or their accomplishments were supposedly inferior.
You should read the TFN editorial here, and the racist quotes above are from this page.

Now is this the state of Texas as it presently exists or the the proposed Republic of Texas that secession, due to having a black man as POTUS, would create?
wow. losing their minds, and their socio-economic-geopolitical grips.
NOW can we give Texas back to Mexico?
And the sad thing is that Morrison isn't the worst member of the SS curriculum committee. As a Texan, I'm doing what I can to help (I'm now in Austin and am becoming an active TFN member), but sometimes I really think Texas is a lost cause. I just hope they don't seriously try to secede until I manage to graduate from college and move out, because I don't want to have to worry about getting US citizenship.
Only if we get to keep Austin. That, or you'll have to give me a chance to move to another state.
The first sign of racist is racism denial, never fails.
In actual schools. In Texas.
I detect an inconsistency.
Wow - they got Revisionist History and Fox News?
I just watched Blazing Saddles a few days ago; a lot has changed but some things haven't changed that much - Blazing Saddles pokes fun at a lot of the bigotry prevalent in that era. These days if you mention saint Patrick everyone drones on about how they love the Irish. Well, many of my great grandparents were Irish and they told a different story - the Irish were loathed for no other reason than they were Irish. In fact my ancestors would deny their Irish heritage - but with names like Nellie Ryan I don't think they would have been very successful with their denials. There's that line from Blazing Saddles which shows just how much the Irish were hated: "OK, we'll take the niggers and chinks, but we won't have any Irish!"
Austin is effectively Berlin 1948, surrounded by a different sort of repugnant violent authoritarian regime. Be glad the airports and roads are still open.
The louder the TFN can trumpet this to the rest of the nation, hopefully the more willing the sane people of the nation will be to act and speak out against this shameful minority.
In the past I've called out Greg for overbroadly generalizing Texans as being a pack of mouth-breathing gun-happy religious racist retards; not today. He's calling it like it is, and I appreciate that.
However, I do have a question for people who would happily write off Texas as a ghastly backwards hellhole and let it languish or secede - why would you abandon the victims of southern intolerance and bigotry today in 2009? And is there any moral difference in abandoning these people today compared to abandoning them in 1958 or 1963? Does it matter that the victims aren't all black? Or latino?
Mind you, I'm not calling this out as specifically anti-white discrimination - it affects all Texans regardless of race, though you might claim that racial minorities are hit harder by the SBOE nutjobs than white kids. But I do wonder if there's less national outrage because the racist behavior of the SBOE's "experts" is directed at textbooks rather than directly at people.
Why is it so easy to write off Texans? Is it because most of them are white and are expected to fend for themselves against a well-funded state-sanctioned oppressor? Is it just unfashionable?
In the past I've called out Greg for overbroadly generalizing Texans as being a pack of mouth-breathing gun-happy religious racist retards; not today.
I generally don't use the word "retard"...
But you are right, we should not, and will not, abandon Texas.
"Why is it so easy to write off Texans? "
I think for some (not all) it is merely an easy way to express frustration over the frequency with this this type of story comes out of Texas.
It's hard enough to maintain good relationships with Mexico without people making un-called for threats like that.
Unfortunately, as I understand it, Texas is one of the giants in the textbook world, so it's not just social studies in Texas he's going to influence. It's social studies in a decent chunk of the rest of America that gets those standards too because everyone wants to be able to sell their textbook in Texas.
I think for some (not all) it is merely an easy way to express frustration over the frequency with this this type of story comes out of Texas.
But at least we don't have our own category at Fark (I'm looking at you, Florida).
Racism, denial of racism, and projection of racism in Texas. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you.
I'm enough of a cultural relativist that I won't support invading Burma, despite the human-rights abuses they impose on their citizenry. The victims of an oppressive government there are, at least, free to leave. That's not really adequate, but it's a better solution than invasion and attempting to impose enlightenment by occupation.
The same goes for Texas.
Racism is alive and well, and flourishing, here and in other states, especially the south. The only difference between today and 1960 is that it is now a little more likely (not much, but a little) to be detrimental to one's career to be open about one's racism. I believe it goes back to belief that 'niggers' have bigger penises, and if a white woman ever got to experience one, she would abandon her white husband because his was smaller. That's still a common belief and fear, although none of the rednecks will admit it. If you live down here long enough, though, you learn that it's true, and I've lived here my whole life, so far. There is an uncomfortably large sector of the white population of Texas, and the south as a whole, which will never, ever abandon their hatred of all non-white people.
If you do give Texas back to Mexico, please make sure you get me and my bro out, first.
(Also currently dealing with a racist shit on my blog.)
BD, I can't imagine Mexico wanting Texas back. Mexico has oil and plenty of seacoast. There's really not much else in Texas worth having -- certainly not enough to overcome all the problems that taking in millions Texans would bring.
Although -- some of those problems would be at least mitigated by requiring Spanish as the official language for all business and requiring Spanish proficiency and a reasonable amount of education (including biological sciences) before getting the vote.
I don't think there are very many Texans who would be able to handle a country that has real separation of Church and State, though.
No, you're more likely to see the Lone Star Republic back again. You and your brother would have to sneak across into New Mexico to reach civilization.
I discover unpredictability in authentic schools in Texas.
What's your opinion about that ?
what exactly is a racist retard?
for goodness sakes, leave people with special needs out of it. Using the word retard is just demeaning and very wrong.
Being retarded and being a racist are two very different things and shouldn't be used in the same sentence.
Racism is alive and well in Robertson County,Texas. Watch American Violet a true story about Regina Kelly and the District Attorney John Paschall
