No, it is a "sunfish" (not sure which species exactly ... we have our local lore but that is not helpful.)

Poor fishyfish.

Actually, Mike, I'm pretty sure this is a Lepomis of some kind, not a crappie (which is Pomoxis). It is either a pumkinseed or a female blugill.

Figured. Oh, and sorry, my internet connection keeps crapping out.

Asha: My Internet Connection is going down! Email me nre fishing times! And go to sleep, it's late!

Not being expert on sunfish, I'll guess a bluegill x green sunfish hybrid. The long pectoral fin is bluegillish, but the mouth looks too large for a bluegill and the white borders on the pelvic fins are like a green sunfish.

I like your idea regarding the borders (I had had the same thought) but the large mouth is said to be a feature of greenies. Yet, there seems to be a sort of orgy going on down there anyway, so hybrids are not at all out of the question .

Big un, ainnit?

Bait? Tackle?

Did you set the drag light and let it fight or did you just horse it on in?

Light tackle 6 lb test, small bucktail jig with a leech, drag set as low as it would go without the reel falling apart.

That fish was not big. The one I caught the day before was HUGE but I didn't have the damn camera. The fish you see here is the one I caught while trying to reconstruct the previous day's catch.

Looks like a warmouth aka google-eye to me. They do hybridize with green and pumpkinseed sunfish so everyone could be right.

Someday I'm going to write a post on the biogeography and stuff of the sun fishes.

This does look just like a warmouth, (Lepomis gulosus). My first reaction was that that is a warmer water southern species, but I can't actually think of a reason to rule it out other than that the DNR has never reported them being in this lake. But the more I look at sunfish iformation the less comfortable I am drawing any conclusions.

Further study is needed....

... then I suddenly discover that in Mn warmouth is found only in the Mississppi. However, this lake drains into boy river, which drains into a lake through which the Mississippi passes. so....

All the sunfish have been widely stocked in ponds so finding a warmouth there would not be odd if they can survive the winters. For that matter a green x warmouth hybrid may well be more cold tolerent. I seem to remember a local hatchery selling bluegill x green x warmouth hybrids and they are known to hybridize in nature so might be an intergrade.
