Facebook Movie "Get a Life" Meme

I've got a meme below the fold. This is lifted from Facebook, where it was posted by Miles Kurland.

SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 movies, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 219 movies on this list. Copy this list, then paste it on facebook or on your blog. Then, put x's next to the movies you've seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click publish at the side.

Having known miles for many decades, I would have thought HE'd be the one with the life, but apparently not ... My total is a measly 60.

More like this

Oh dear. I have a bad feeling about this. Via Greg Laden's blog comes a list of 219 movies and supposedly if you have seen more than 85 you have no life... Prepare yourself (x) Rocky Horror Picture Show (x) Grease (x) Pirates of the Caribbean (x) Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest ( )…
Timothy Sandefur says this is the hot thing to do on blogs, and being the fashionable guy I am, I'll play along. It's a list of the top 100 grossing films of all time, with bold for the ones you saw in the theater and italics for the ones you saw on video, along with a few comments: 1. Titanic (…
Nobody officially "tagged" me for this, but I saw it at Easily Distracted, and it seems like a good post topic for the Friday before Christmas. The idea is to pick one movie title for each letter of the alphabet. The list below the fold is not an attempt to come up with Great Films for each letter…
Robert Farley, writing at Tapped, has an excellent review of the new Spider-Man movie. I think he perfectly summarizes the film's good points and bad points. He makes the point, exactly right in my opinion, that it's not that Spider-Man III is unusually bad, it's that Spider-Man II was unusually…

Okay, I'm going to have to do this one--and I'm going to have to lend you some movies.

By the way, you do know some movies have Xs in the title, right?

I watch movies instead of TV. Do the same thing for television shows, and it'll be a different story. Never-the-less my total was 105.

"The Si th Sense" would have been more interesting, I'm sure of it.

What an idiotic metric. If you've seen X number of movies you have no life? Over what time period? If you've seen 85 movies in the past 3 months and aren't a professional movie reviewer, that may be the case. I'm almost 40. Let's say I started watching movies when I was 15. So if I have watched more than three movies per year I have no life? How long are these movies?!??!?!

116 here, which is about the current size of my Netflix queue. I already knew I didn't have a life. :)

By Dread Polack (not verified) on 19 Dec 2008 #permalink

I scored 80, but I can easily think of at least 20 more movies that aren't on that list. Of course, I already knew that I had no life.

p.s. I think there's a missing end em tag. Lots of italics going on

109... I can't help but feel that since the average Facebook user is about 13, for a late-twenty-something like myself a far higher number is cool.

Yea, this was a first cup of coffee in the morning post . I deleted all of Mile's x's, and thus all the other x's at the same time (but I put some back). Then, I accidently italicized the entire internet . Ooops.

I ended up with 58 and a few theories about the person who put the list together. The theories are probably wrong, but I was getting annoyed by that point by what wasn't on the list.

@StephanieZ - I know, right? That list was sorely lacking. I'm going to post my own addition with the important movies. When I get time.

94 here.

I agree with many of the commenters above about how silly this is. These are movies I saw years ago--many of them on HBO. But I don't watch TV anymore (I currently have no life because I'm plugged into the intert00bz). And not only was I disappointed by what was missing, but there was a lot of unnecessary movies there. Was there a need to put all the movies of an given series there? Wouldn't it have been enough to put the first of the series and the least populer and leave room for other movies? I mean, if you're a fan of Star Wars or Sam Raimi's Evil Dead movies, OF COURSE you'll have seen every one of them.

Ah, Orgazmo. How can you not love a movie about a Mormon missionary turned porn star?

Anyway, 70 from this list for me, but my home collection contains more than 85 movies plus the DVD version of several TV shows. I guess that translates to "no life."

Oh, CyberLizard, you deprived yourself of your chance to never, ever be able to take James Earl Jones as the voice of Vader seriously again. Isn't that worth...er...something?

StephanieZ, I have a high threshold for pain, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I'm still writhing in agony over the midichloriads.

Agreed. What is the logic behind what's here and what isn't? I know you didn't make this list, but here are some Academy Awrd winning films that aren't listed, that I've seen:

A Beautiful Mind
American Beauty
Shakespeare In Love
Unforgiven
Rain Man
Out Of Africa
Terms Of Endearment
Amadeus
Ghandi
Chariots Of Fire
The Deer Hunter
Rocky
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
The Sting
The Godfather
Lawrence Of Arabia
Around The World In Eighty Days
On The Waterfront
Casablanca
Gone With The Wind

And what about Stripes, Animal House, Meatballs, Friday the 13th, Caddyshack, Fletch, The Princess Bride, Office Space, Clerks, etc.?

Of the ones on the list, I've seen 63, btw, but I've seen well into the hundreds in my lifetime. I guess the issue is FB users vs the real world.

My list:

( ) Expelled

A score of one or more - you have no life AND you are pathetic.

By T. Bruce McNeely (not verified) on 19 Dec 2008 #permalink

66, counting a few movies which I have seen beginning, middle, and end... but not in one sitting or in that order.

I live in an apartment with roughly 2000 paperback SF books; there is no way I should qualify as having a life.

136!!!
I certainly have a life.
I just happen to be fond of both good and bad movies.
I think that I own copies of at least 50 of these.

No Mommie Dearest?

This list sucks. :)

I got 96 -- but I have over 300 movies on DVD at home (not all of my DVDs are 'Dora' - despite current appearances!)

I agree that the list seems strangely skewed - some art-house, some totally run-of-the-mill.

No Hitchcock, No Ealing comedies, No Marx brothers, or Laurel & Hardy (or even three stooges!), No 007 (not even Dr No) or Matt Helm(!) or Spies (Smiley?), No spaghetti westerns, (no westerns, really), no war movies (battle of the bulge?, great escape?), nothing French (Jacques Tati, anyone?), or Spanish, or German (only a couple 'cool' Japanese). No Austin Powers (and no British 'lad' movies of the sixties or seventies - where do you think Michael Caine earned his acting chops)

I think I've easily watched (and remembered) at least one full movie every week for my entire life. Discounting my early childhood, and even accounting for 'doubles', that still exceeds 2000 movies.

Re: Snatch!

Definitely -- you should also see Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Other movies that should be on any list:
( ) trainspotting
( ) Como agua para chocolat (but NOT the stupid remake, except for comparison!)
( ) Tampopo (you'll never look at noodles in quite the same way again)
( ) So I married an Axe Murderer! (just perfect!)
( ) 2001 (don't even bother with the dialog - just look!)
( ) The Life of Brian (better than the grail, IMHO)
( ) Clockwork Orange (in fact almost any Kubrick movie!)

Greg
You really should check these out.
( ) American History X
( ) Shaun Of the Dead
( ) 28 days later
( ) Kill Bill vol 1
( ) Kill Bill vol 2
( ) Pi
( ) Requiem for a Dream
There were more in there that I enjoyed and you haven't seen, but these are pretty damned strong, in my opinion.
They vary from intense to silly to disturbing, but they're all great.

"No, no, I didn't see Snatch."
Aw man!! Add that to the list.
Great movie.

One thing that's required for enjoying many of the recommended movies is a high tolerance for movie violence. If that's not your thing, I also recommend She's All That, Ten Things I Hate About You, and Ever After as somewhat subversive teen flicks and Waiting for Guffman and Calendar Girls as commedies aimed at adults (not that teens won't appreciate them).

Oh man, I've seen 137! I need to get out more...

"Oh man, I've seen 137! I need to get out more..."

You beat me by one, so I'm going to take the oportunity to judge you and agree that you need to get out more.

Are any of these older than the late seventies? Except Zatoichi and The Seven Samurai, that is.

Anyway, I only hit 70 but anyone who says I have a life clearly doesn't know me.

I've seen 23 of those movies. Most of the rest I'd never even heard of before.

99 and there were about 10+ more films on the list I started watching and turned off after half an hour (mostly crap sequels).
