See the data over at The Audacious Epigone. This sort of finding shouldn't be super "counter-intuitive," there are a lot of variables which affect the opinions of a set of people on a disparate set of questions, and one shouldn't expect too much internal consistency. I may be that all things…
The Audacious Epigone crunches the Pew Religion Survey and comes up with some more insights....
A few days ago the Audacious Epigone pointed out that Episcopalians are in the same neighborhood as Jews in the United States on intelligence tests; i.e., on the order of a bit more than 2/3 of a standard deviation above the norm. The recent paper on religion & IQ confirmed these findings.…
The Audacious Epigone has an interesting post up, Burden of boredom borne by blockheads:
This isn't just me speaking from personal experience--the data confirm it. The GSS asked respondents in 1982 and again in 2004 how often they have time on their hands that they don't know what to do with. Using…
You spurred me to finally impinge on Inductivist's territory. Thanks.
I blame slivovitz.
There must be an error with the data, because there's no way that a significant proportion of the population of any country believe that it is "always justifiable" to beat one's wife. Not even wife beaters would agree with that proposition.
82% favorable? With the second highest value at 26%? Difficult to take this seriously.
It's worth pointing out that Slovenia is the most advanced Balkanic country, by pretty much any standard. It's in the EU and the Eurozone. Its GDP per capita is about $29K, to be compared with Italy's $30K. Basically, it's a first-world country.
Of course that doesn't stop agnostic from running away with it and offering a miscagenation explanation in the comments...
I have to agree with toto on this. I have a lot of trouble believing this is accurate data. If it is accurate there better be a very good explanation for it.
Haha, this is probably wrong, I mean come on 80%?? I am a slovenian and I don't think we are beating wifes at all. Sure a few mentally challenged, but there are those people in all countries. And to put it right, we are not a balkanic country, slovenia alone never was and never will be. To be more clear, as a part of yugoslavia we really were a balkanic country, but not that we got our independence we are out of balkan peninsula. A minimal percentage of our land is a part of balkan peninsula, but that way italians are balkanians as well, they sure are similar :P We all know how their south looks like.
