Sport is an existential crisis

What's not to like about that?

I usually don't read Maureen Dowd (if I want funny, I'll go here), but my eyes wandered and I ended up reading today's column. Either all of the shouting from the bloggysphere did some good, or else she's been replaced with a pod person. About the charge of 'elitism' leveled at Obama by Karl Rove…
It's beautiful: the devil's fingers, AKA the octopus fungus. Even just the name is like a barbed hook calculated to draw me in. It has other interesting features, besides the awesome appearance. While unappealing to us humans, Stop right there. Am I not human? Did I not coo in delight when I…
A: Probably. * * * DN: So Ben, what's up with those mountain tops? BRC: They're fewer than there used to be, that's what I know. DN: Less places to ski and stuff? BRC: But many more places to golf, apparently. DN: Ben, is that for real? Mountain top removal for coal, for golf, for kicks,…
As I mentioned, I'm busy, so I'll just do this in pictures, kinda like a cartoon: There was no "walk back" by Joe. He merely added some links. The results of the poll so far: Personally, I'm hoping for "Force him" ... that would be fun to watch. Meanwhile, there is a lesson here. Science…

Thank you. Quite valuable information. For the rest of the season, I am betting the 'under' on all Jacksonville games.

Same thing happened to me years ago.

I had a sixteen-penny nail half sunk in a two-by-four when the uselessness of it all struck me. Sure, I could finish framing the house and soon some fine young family would move in, bringing their dreams along with the china and leatherette pit group. But they would only see most of their dreams evaporate and the sheer effort required to save their remaining hopes would render a grim and gritty kind of satisfaction instead of the joy they had expected.

The Foreman, a wise man, took note of my dilemma and offered the most inspired counsel I've ever heard. He threatened to fire me if I kept daydreaming.

And I'm still driving that damned nail.

Nothing concentrates the mind like imminent unemployment. Life may be a cosmic accident, but life without food and shelter is much worse...

Shouldn't you be finished with that nail by now?
