Just finished teaching my last class for the term. Feels soooo goooood.
Well, there are still finals to get through, and the extra-long office hours I generously hold on the days before the finals. And then comes the grading. Sooooo much grading. First the exams. Then the course grades. Then a lull of a few days. And then the inevitable complaints from a few disgruntled students. Graduation is in there somewhere which is actually kind of fun, except for the part about getting up way early on a Saturday.
But then comes summer break. Yaaaay! Since I am not teaching any summer courses, or supervising any undergraduate research, I am very light on the formal responsibilities. Plenty of work to be done, certainly, just not the sort of work that's done on a fixed schedule. And since most of it is the sort of work I enjoy (writing, research, that sort of thing) it doesn't really feel like work at all.
And the blogging. Oh yes. There will be blogging...

congratulations. our semester ended last week on friday. graduation was sunday, grades were due monday at 10:00 am. got 'em in, but it was hectic.
I stayed in bed and took a nap during my high-school graduation. Four years later, I stayed in my apartment and slept during my university graduation. (My old roommate had to go because his parents showed up, and he says he slept through it too.) Now you tell me that if I grow up to be a professor — and I seem ill suited to be anything else, except maybe a Shakespearean over-actor — I have to go to the ceremony? Way to fill me with horror and dread!
My first year here I didn't go to graduation. At our first faculty meeting the following year our chair politely reminded us that attending graduation was expected of all faculty and that the math department was poorly represented the previous year. I have not missed one since.
I actually kind of like graduation, especially when, as this year, I have recently taught a lot of the students who are graduating.
Good for you. I've been following your blog for a long time. You seem happy and that's a good thing.
and its always good to remember that 90% of life is just showing up, so have fun at the ceremony.
I myself am having some life changing events. I am leaving my house to my wife and son and am moving into the city to start a new me.
odd, but refreshing.
