Mystery Volcano Photo #27

Quiet weekend on the whole, volcano-wise, beyond the articles about the latest eruption at Karangetang. So, we'll start this week with a new Mystery Volcano Photo. The last MVP was Tarawera in a shot I took from a road on the back side of the volcano, so that leaves the current standings looking like this:

Well, Eyjafjallajökull is bubbling along nicely, there is still some ash coming out, but not high enough to carry as far, and less of it. And the wind is turning, so tomorrow Icelandic airports will close as the ash comes back west across the country. There is also a curiousity on the ice cap above…
Last week, we embarked on an adventure with BLAST. BLAST, short for Basic Alignment Search Tool, is a collection of programs, written by scientists at the NCBI (1) that are used to compare sequences of proteins or nucleic acids. BLAST is used in multiple ways, but last week my challenge to you,…
Eyjafjallajökull erupted tonight. Small so far, we'll see how it develops, first eruption in 187 years. Eruptions tracked the microquaking leading up to the eruption - fascinating and very long comment conversation and liveblogging of the precursors to the eruption. Tremendous use of blogging.…
Fantastic volcano blogger, and all around cool guy, Erik Klemetti has put out a call for volcano pictures that he can use on his Eruptions blog. I'd love to be able to send him some fantastic shot of a plinian eruption, but I live in a pretty tectonically quiet part of the world. So this weekend,…

Piece of cake Eric!,...it's Lassen peak.

This is cheating... always these volcanos that are impossible to sail past;)

Mammoth Mountain, CA?

Well, again I think I have something a little tricky - a shot with some clouds from an off-trail location - and somebody gets it on the first try. This is, indeed, a shot of Lassen Peak from the south side of Chaos Crags - not the usual shot for Lassen, but enough for Rodger to nail it.

Good job, Rodger!
Thank you Erik!

hehehe Erik,. even I saw that this was lassen peak, and I have not even been there, just read about it and have edited photos of it like a 100 times at work,. :)

first that gave this mountain of is the firs, then , I tought ok its california. so it has to be lassen, shasta doenst look like this at all :)

Lassen Peak is another example of a major geologic feature with aspect than is highly changeable with season, weather and time of day. Erik chose a good image of Lassen; it is not view that is the most photo-documented on the web.

Good lord, I thought that was a low-intensity ash cloud around the summit and I just *knew* it was Popo. :-)

I was going with one of the lesser know peaks in southern Oregon, based on tree line and type, so not far off.

I thought it might be Mammoth because of the glaciated crags peeking over the mountain's shoulder on the right. I considered Lassen but couldn't remember similar formations nearby. Haven't been there but twice. Memory dims.

I should have known! I have been on top of Lassen twice! What threw me was the cinder rubble in the forground. That is what led me to guess Shastina, but there was something about the features on the picture that, as Roger said, spoke Lassen. I love Lassen and Lassen Park. It is a beautiful area.

Damn, I wish I'd checked earlier - I recognized it instantly, being from Chester. I figured you'd put a picture of Lassen up sooner or later ...

And Lassen looks very, very different depending on the angle. Though, personally, I don't even think it's the most interesting volcano in the Park. Too touristy.
