Annals of McCain - Palin, VIII: fish heaven

"The fish love to be around those rigs!"

He looks like somebody's crazy uncle. Except that he wants to be Uncle Sam.

More like this

Peter Barnes, founder of one of the first social businesses - Working Assets - is full of good ideas. And people are starting to notice. His most recent book Capitalism 3.0 builds on his previous book Who Owns The Sky, which lays out a public trust model for public goods - like the sky and the…
The soul might not be immortal but the canard there are no atheists in foxholes seems unkillable. This particular piece of mythology goes back to a statement by U.S. Army Chaplain William Thomas Cummings just before the Battle of Bataan in 1942. If the Bataan Death March convinced anyone on it to…
You know, there are really a remarkable number of bands whose names begin with "S"... There may be more "B" or "T" acts in my library, just because I own a bazillion songs by Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, but there sure are a lot of "S" artists. This set continues to show that sing-along-ability is the…
After his behavior in Monday's post about the Geiers, I've reluctantly decided to issue my first ban ever on a commenter. The one on the receiving end? Fore Sam. Is anyone surprised? His rhetoric has become increasingly violent-sounding, with his posting comments suggesting that Kathleen Seidel…

Well lets see THE FISH do love to be around rigs if you havent ever been near one... especially shrimp. The rig you highlight is on land and flooded. The storage facility is also flooded, but I think I saw this same picture when Hugo went to the Carolinas. The floating rig would have been disconnected from the pipe on the sea floor anyway long before this damage happened. It also didnt sink.

And then there is the simple fact that unless you are ready to buy a new Volt or Prius.... there is that Volvo that sucks fuel from the same pipes that we all get our fuel from. Unless the socialist/liberal/Democrat party has something to stick into our fuel tanks, they had better quit trying to take the high ground on this one and quit fooling around before we really get into trouble.

We are in a recession because of fuel prices and a housing bubble. In 29 it was the uncontrolled margin spreads. 100% in some cases. Obama either voted no or failed to vote 95 times on controls in the markets AND he really sucked up the money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac when it came to campaign contributions. Only his buddy Dodd got more.

So do you have something thats viable in lieu of gasoline/diesel? So far ethanol only has made people starve to death. Please, do pipe up and identify the source of those pictures. A dead fish? Wheres the autopsy. Flooded inland well? Different standards for the EPA.

I guess the Messiah has all of this figured out? Well the first thing is that he is going to tax to drive down consumption...wont need it because as with Carter the jobs will be gone. He will come in and finish off what might just be getting a new start. Then he is going to tax the hell out of the oil companies. They make too much money. Of course that will in turn just be passed right back to us. Then he will increase the size of government by 2 fold. Hey we get back into the money mill thing again and as I said 3 years ago hyperinflation will result. He is going to cut spending on the military... Putin loves this guy. He is going to sit down and negotiate with the terrorist states. He will cut a deal. But then when it all starts to come apart at the end of year two, the elections will happen again and the impeachment proceedings start.

Somewhere along the way we will have a big attack maybe on New York because all of that spending now is for a military response... Hell, he knows its a police matter.

OR, if he dumps Biden and puts Hillary in then he will suddenly turn up dead about year 2.

These are predictions of an Obama presidency. They will over spend, over tax and above all overregulate and we are going to be the sheep that get shorn and Eastern Europe will fall under the Russians again.

I aint happy with McCain, but I am certainly less happy with Obama the community organizer. I cant see that he has ever held a real, non political job of any kind.

Revere this blog is getting very far from its stated purpose, "Effect measure is a forum for progressive public health discussion and argument as well as a source of public health information from around the web that interests the author." I usually check this site for health issues I may not have been aware of but there's been very little health news lately. 54,000 babies sick in China and not a mention? Whatever, you're entitled to write what you want, it justs seems that this blog has little to do with science anymore.

Anon,

Whoever is elected Prez controls the purse-strings for the American Health System, so yes, it matters who gets elected.

Let's send a yummy oily Gulf of Mexico fish to Mrs. McCain and get it served up for supper! Side dishes of pureed polar bear and wok'd wolf would be nice too....

Revere, I guess you struck a nerve. Cognitive dissonance is the first inkling some people get that they are on the wrong track. We need more of that, not less.

I see the connection to public health and to science in every one of your recent posts. Scientific methods can be applied to political debates too, and they certainly have a very large impact on health.

anon: I discussed the Chinese milk contamination last week. There is a health post every day, usually in the morning. I have said here often, public health has the word public in it. Politics is important to public health. I have usually hitched the McCain posts to some topic we have dealt with here (religion, health, science), but we aren't rigid about it. Meanwhile this is the most important election in my (reasonably long) lifetime. I won't ignore it.

It's not an "election" it's a "(s)election" revere.
In all your intelligence you can't see that?
Too bad you won't be around for the revolution. I may not be either, but it's going to happen.

Sorry Revere, noticed the milk contamination article after posting. I'm not really criticizing your opinions on the upcoming election, just expressing my disappointment that this blog is lately being dominated by politics- not the type of posts that drew me to this blog in the first place. Maybe the differences I've been noticing is just because of the changing of Reveres. Anyway its just an observation and I probably should of kept it to myself but I think I'm coming down with something and don't tend to think straight then.

I was about to do a point by point rebuttal but it dawned on me that there is almost nothing you get right, a clear indication of your partisanship overwhelming your ability to reason, and arguing with lunatics is a waste of time.

Nine paragraphs and you only get one thing right. But that's a really nice regurgitation of the Rove/Rush talking points. Did you do it from memory or did you use a crib sheet?

And that one thing you did get right? I'm assuming you know how to spell your own name.

Art,

OK Mr. Smarty Pants...what fuel do you propose we use and point to someone who is advocating it with something more than rhetoric like "We need to research alternative fuels".

At least T Boone Pickens has a plan! At least McCain/Palin have a plan, albeit one you are not happy with.

Your partisanship is much clearer than MRK's. But your ideas certainly are not.

Art, four seconds after Congress adjourns for the elections the ban on offshore drilling will expire unless they can somehow manage to tack it onto the budget bill for the DoD. Fat chance.

Democrats and not liberal/socialists ones have gotten the message and this is that even though it aint the cleanest thing we can be doing, we have to drill... NOW! When environmental concerns start killing people, cause stock market collapses then we got really big problems.

You have some real viable alternative please by all means stick it out there at the pump or whatever and I'll go for it. Dont even start about electric. Why? Because to charge those little mothers up its going to cook the power grid for starts. The violence of the fires and explosions from a rear ender is horrendous and they get shit in actual gas mileage compared to what we are told. Electric is a California car where the sun shines most the time. But they dont have the power grid for it either.

So someone else other than me finally figured it out. There is nothing viable about it even with their little on board charging systems. GM is putting the Volt out there next year in 10 and Chrysler has it starting late next year. But the bottom line is that again a four hour charge time, plug it in and run up your electric bill higher than your gas bill is not the BIG IDEA. And Obama hasnt got a clue. If he is elected then he is going to have to come up with something better and the the technology doesnt exist. Keep working at it of course, I would be one of the first to use it. But it has to be cost effective and 40,000 dollar boxes is not what I call cost effective.

"environmental concerns start killing people, cause stock market collapses"
The only thing that causes that stuff is GREED. Unchecked, unregulated HUMAN greed. You need to read more history, Randy, you might learn something from it.

Goindy...Not really thats part of that lib/socialist/Democrat guilt trip crap. When it becomes illegal in this country to make money from whatever source as long as its legal then this tripe about compensation is pure unadulterated, unchecked and above all unregulated crap.

So by starting this guilt trip stuff its supposed to be greed? If you look through history, all the way back to only the Bible I can find only people living at the expense of others... Perhaps you should read up on a lot more history Goindy...Required in the military for PME.

WE have created an artificial problem here by not drilling. The UN cant buy food for the starving and its directly related to the price of oil. Either we drill or millions will die, plain and simple and it might not just be from starvation. We didnt start to have real problems in the mortgage markets until the price of oil started its mountainous climb. It was manageable. Then the cost of doing business and operations against reality started to weigh in. Go to work and lose money, go to work and not be able to pay the mortgage anyway.

But we wouldnt have had these problems either if Clinton hadnt pressured the banking industry into making crap loans... Bush isnt without blame either as the majority of it happened on his shift. BUT, Obama, Dodd, Dems and quite a few Republicans voted against regulating the industry more strongly. He warned in July of a bubble burst and then quietly voted to not regulate it more. How convenient.

But the post I guess is McCain Palin and how drilling is going to screw up the water. Thats surge over an oil rig from what the people at Fox News told me. So whats the point in even posting it? The water does rise in a hurricane. The dead fish...Could we get the credentials for this fish please? Has he been vetted yet? Is he dead from pollution, was he laid there by Jane Pauley, or was he killed by some miscreant operation of Dick Cheney? I am sure he was waterboarded before he died.

The oil rig I have seen before. But, clearly the point is missed here and that is that if oil goes to 500 a barrel or even 200 then MILLIONS of people are going to die in Africa and other places as the aid train dries up. Cant feed them. Simply no money to give because its not in the US Treasury or the people here to give it.

Kind of like what happens when we are taxed for bullshit programs that are not in the Constitution.... like "Entitlements"

Thanks for the fishy clip, I've featured it on blogfish. Fish do congregate around oil rigs, but I'm not sure they actually love eating the little animals that live in the toxic muds at the base of the rigs. I wouldn't eat those fish...but that's a whole nother story.

Ah Mark so now its a contaminated fish.......

Big surprise... It HAS to be contaminated to make your post come out right.

I really like this attitude that the libs/socialists/Democrats have. First its a contamjnated fish, the mud at the base HAS to be contaminated and of course oil is the problem.

Lets look at it a dfiferent way. If we DONT drill for oil then the price of food is going to sky rocket. After that the newly added 1/2 billion that are going to be infesting this planet by 2012 are going to die from starvation. Biblical but we dont do that here. We also will be very cold us survivors. Our cars wont be able to go anywhere because the price of oil/gasoline is only for the very rich, but there wont be many of those because those guilt tranferring liberals/socialists/Democrats pass new laws in 09 to cap compensation for not only bailout companies, but everyone. It goes with your new job description provided to you by the federal government.......You know, they h ad it before....It was a serf to the government.

To you its a fish, to me its a ecological lynch pin for people who just think that the technology is there now to jump to. You got something to keep people alive, driving their transportation mode, and do it both cheaply and ecologically friendly then sign me up. Until then lets keep running those tankers instead of drilling and putting it thru pipes with check valves on them and drive them through heavy seas for 3500 miles.

Yep, that makes sense.

Right.
