Jefferson and Christianity

There is an interesting exchange on Jefferson and Christianity going on in the neighborhood, which I think was kicked off by Jon Rowe's fisking of a very bad article the other day that included what appears to be a fake quote from Jefferson. Sandefur picked up on the discussion of the Jefferson quote with this post. Then Jason Kuznicki posted about it here and here. And so did Paul Musgrave and Caleb McDaniel. The only one I wasn't familiar with in that was the last one, and how on earth did Caleb manage to escape my notice all this time? He writes about history, religion, and jazz - the holy trinity, in my book. Definitely one I need to read more often.

More like this

I remember in the last couple years, it was announced that Paul Rodgers was going to join Queen to replace Freddy Mercury. Jon Rowe and Jason Kuznicki both posted on it, with Jon being mildly cautious about it and Jason calling the idea "insane". I recall at the time thinking that Jason was closer…
Jon Rowe has a post linking to this article by Dave Daubenmire, a guy whose sole credentials are that he once coached high school football. Now, I remember taking classes from the coaches in high school. I remember having to explain econometric formulas to the baseball coach who taught economics,…
Jon Rowe has a fascinating post at Positive Liberty about John Witherspoon, one of our more neglected founding fathers. As Jon notes, Witherspoon is interesting because he was a very orthodox Christian but also an outspoken proponent of the Enlightenment philosophy that undergirds our liberal…
While reading Sandefur's book I came across a wonderful quote from a businessman explaining why he left a big company to start his own business: I was going to move to a place I didn't like to work for a boss I didn't respect, devoting my energies to office politics for which I had little talent. I…

The "next" link for this post is busted; it points way back into the archive so I found myself reading in circles. Thanks for the effort in writing and producing such an educational and entertaining site.

Never mind; it seems to have fixed itself. If you feel like saving me embarrassment you can delete both my comments here.

Caleb is also a real-life friend of mine. We don't always see eye to eye, but I've been promoting his blog whenever the chance arises. He writes good stuff, and it would be better if bloggers of all political stripes shared his probity and inquiring spirit.

Jim-
I think that's a joke. Did you intend it to be or did you take it seriously?

Thanks, Ed and Jason, for the kind words. You've saved me from shameless self-promotion by shamelessly promoting me yourselves! I'm obliged.
