Obama and the Eating of Jellyfish in Outer Space

The people of Obama are selling jellyfish candy.  Really.

.  These creatures occasionally href="http://scienceblogs.com/guiltyplanet/2009/07/another_year_another_giant_jel.php">swarm
off the coast of Japan, where they are a nuisance.  Some
creative souls have responded by href="http://scienceblogs.com/shiftingbaselines/2008/02/more_jellies_fill_your_belly.php">finding
ways to eat them.

Now, schoolkids in the Japanese town of Obama are capitalizing on
this.  As it happens, there is a bit of a fad there, for caramel
candies.  The school has taken to mixing jellyfish power into the
candy.  Then, they elevated their marketing, literally into outer
space:

The Obama students aren't content with just producing a a
jellyfish caramel treat. The high schoolers have also requested that
the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) put the caramels on the
menu for astronauts journeying to the International Space Station,
presumably in a bid to raise awareness of their tasty solution to the
jellyfish problem.

Last week, fresh off the fourth-to-last Shuttle mission, STS-131, NASA astronaut Jim Dutton came to speak at OMSI, my local science museum. When I got the email about this event, I RSVPed immediately -- after all, an astronaut in my town? How urbane. Surely the intelligentsia of Oregon would come…
When Daniel Pauly first began talking about jellyfish burgers, he did so as an absurd metaphor. I blogged about it and, with the help of Sherman Lai, made this rudimentary burger: Then, we upped the jellyfish burger ante when digital artist Dave Beck and I made this fancier version: Meanwhile,…

Well, the thought of eating a jellyfish doesn't excite me much, but that is a great picture. I didn't realize a jelly could get that big.

As a Jewish astronaut it is not kosher and I would not eat it! Send Empire Kosher Chicken to space.
