I was going to explain in a timely manner, but:
firstly - if you don't get an evergreen and some candles going, then winter will never end
secondly - if the kids don't get candles, clothes and a game, the yule cat will eat them
thirdly - you have to keep the yule lads amused, so they will not play pranks on you, if you're too mean their mother will kidnap you, and she is a troll, you know
fourthly - the Feast of St Thorlacius is the Only occasion upon which real men have an excuse to eat some fermented shark, except of course on the feast of offerings to Thor to mark the end of winter
