And What Are They Saying About the Late Jerry Falwell?

So by now you've probably heard that Jerry Falwell has died. What I'm going to be looking for over the next couple of days is what others are going to be saying, and what that says about them. Let's start with Senator McCain:

"Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country."

"Distinguished accomplishment"? Sure, if you consider being supremely talented as bigoted demagogue an accomplishment. As far as his service is concerned, I'd estimate that it was mostly of the self-serving variety. It certainly wasn't for anyone who disagreed with his narrow-minded anti-intellectual stance on almost anything of importance these days.

Of course, people like the Senator will be quoted in various media outlets. What about you? Why not send an I-Report to CNN to share your thoughts on Falwell's passing? As the CNN page says: "The Rev. Jerry Falwell has died at the age of 73. What are your memories of him? What do you think his legacy will be? Send us your thoughts, photos and videos. "

Yeah. Why not?

Two other items caught my eye while I was slumming over at Town Hall. First, here's William Rusher warning us all about the pernicious influence of junk science: As regular readers know, I seldom review books in these columns, preferring to leave that important job to professional reviewers. But…
Our old friend and favorite state senator, Chris Buttars, is back in the news again. This time he's appearing before the Eagle Forum to be praised by a group that is right about at the same intellectual level (which is to say, vacuous and ignorant): Singing to the choir, Sen. Chris Buttars sought…
There is no other explanation for her eulogy for Falwell entitled, I kid you not, "Jerry Falwell -- Say Hello to Ronald Reagan!" In her impassioned defense of Falwell's most egregious statements, from blaming 9/11 on atheists and gays, to accusing Tinky Winky of being a gay recruiter, she proves…

Try Mark Evanier's comment, "In his honor, let's all think of some way to exploit this sad event to advance our causes and line our pockets." I liked it.

It was God punishing him for being a fat, thieving, bigoted, hypocritical prick.

It isn't too soon to say that, is it?

Wolf Blitzer just aired an interview that Falwell gave a week ago in which he said that he had prayed for god to give him 20 more years of life. Maybe the answer was, "Okay ... psyche!!"

I understand the autopsy showed his aorta was blocked by a French fry.

Don't let the door hit you on your rotund ass on your way out, Jerry.

Jerry Falwell on Sept. 11, 2001

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

Here's what I left:

"Jerry Falwell was a shining example of how far religious intolerance, bigoted demagoguery, and shameless self-promotion can take a man in America these days."

Let's start with Senator McCain:

"Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country."

Yeah I'm sure he felt the same way when he Falwell was helping ruin his campaign in 2000. What a hypocrite.

Good riddance.
