Going (wing)nuts at Google.

As you might recall, early yesterday I noticed that Google had decided to put up a Darwin logo, and predicted that some folks were going to raise hell as a result. That was, of course, one of the safest predictions this side of "it's going to rain in the Amazon Basin sometime this year", but I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the remarks posted on various blogs anyway.

Some of the lunacy can be found below the fold.

The 10:10 Muse writes:

Google may not realize it was the efforts of Abraham Lincoln and each and every American to come since that has ensured their success. It is the liberties they enjoy in this great nation, the opportunities that only America can provide that have given them the incredible growth they have experienced. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, you may believe Darwin is a hero, many do. But on this day, February 12, 2009, the hero you should be celebrating is not the man who has brainwashed a world into thinking he created science when he only created a new religion.

At the aptly named message board "Thee RANT", "Angry MOS" is both angry and massively uninformed:

I get it that Google is a transnational company but they are first and foremost an American company. Instead of honoring Abraham Lincoln, they instead honor some British guy who dug up bones in Africa and played with fauna and flora.

Huckonpolitics isn't surprised about the logo, given Google's "leftist political views", but one of the commenters left a true gem:

I don't remember Darwin freeing the slaves. You'd think that a 'liberal' viewed website would would be more concerned with the 'race' thing, especially this year, than the evolution thing. And I saw where one liberal outlet was comparing Obama to Lincoln. Google...get with it. They are so not PC today....

Delivered by Grace is short and to the point:

It seems that Google recognizes Darwin's birthday with an evolutionary theme. Is this their way of denying Genesis 1:1?

And, last, but not least, you should really take a look at the Freepers. They're actually not all that upset at Google. Turns out a lot of them hate Lincoln more than Darwin.

Feel free to use the comments to point out ones I've missed.

Well, I was hoping Google celebrated both birthdays. Both were great men that had made history. It's funny that the fundies you quoted, especially the first, were pissed at the slight to Lincoln, not knowing that Lincoln was as anti-Christian as Jefferson (some say even more).

I just took your advice and looked at the Freeper comments. Gol dang! I'll stick with ScienceBlogs - even the trolls here make more sense than those yo-yos.
