While I'm out...

I'm dealing with my own little epidemic (daughter managed to catch the stomach bug that's been going around her school, meaning she has to miss her last day as a kindergartener, poor thing). I found one post in the queue that I forgot to publish earlier in the month, so today won't be completely dead. In the meantime, allow me to point you to some excellent flu posts by DemFromCT at the Daily Kos:

Flu Basics: Science And Threats (a nice introductory primer).

Flu Basics II: Politics and Players.

H5N1: A Teachable Moment, And An Open Letter. This is a very good post overall, but the most interesting part for me was an email Dem included:

Nine Reasons Why the Flu Doubters Have It Wrong

We've often wondered why so many people (including friends) who are otherwise perceptive and progressive have such a hard time getting their arms around the genuine threat posed by avian flu and revert instead to denial and charges that the issue is "fear mongering at its worst."

The authors, Dick Brass and his wife, Regina Dwyer, lay out a number of reasons why many people are skeptical of the concern swirling around H5N1, and then (as the title suggests) gives an explanation of why they're misguided--a very nice summary of the issues.

Hopefully back tomorrow, as long as kiddo #2 can stay well...

I got home pretty late last night. The last week or two has seen a huge rise in influenza-like illness (ILI). Late in the evening, I began to get a scratchy throat and chills, but sometimes fatigue can feel like flu. I went home and had a nice dinner and a shower and felt a bit better. At about…
There may not have been much news at the CDC briefing, but it is coming thick and fast now. The CDC works through state health departments and defers to them on information about what is going on in their localities. Hence all questions about this were deflected at the 1 pm CDC briefing. I think I…
It's been a long time coming but the time has come. Effect Measure is closing up shop, after 5 and a half years, 3 million visits and 5.1 million page views of some 3500. You commented on them some 37,000 times. It's been a grand ride but to all things there is a season. It's time to simplify my…
Michael Fumento is piqued because nobody paid any attention to his ludicrous and childish dare to us, DemFromCT at DailyKos and Tim Lambert and MadMike here at SciBlogs: Okay guys, put your bucks where your blogs are! Ten to one odds for each of you; each gets to pick the amount in question. I say…

Tara,

I really enjoy reading your archived posts as I research many topics through out the week. I'm a big Scienceblogs fan and your blog is filled with much needed helpful content so far. Thank you and keep up the hard work!
