As you all have no doubt noticed over the years, I love highlighting the best science books every year via the various end of year lists that newspapers, web sites, etc. publish. I've done it so far in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013,2014 and 2015.
And here we are in 2016!

One of my most recent swap shop finds was Mary-Chapin Carpenter's debut album, Come On Come On (1992). The title track is especially good, and there are several other tracks good enough to make my "Top Rated" playlist.
Lianne La Havas - Green & Gold
Rainy Milo
Lake Street Dive
Ivy
Ooh, I like Lianne La Havas.
#1 - I bought Mary Chapin Carpenter's debut album when it first came out, and used to play it in the car all the time. She had a huge hit from that album titled "Passionate Kisses", which was written by Lucinda Williams, who I think was somewhat underrated as a performer. You can't really understand all of the lyrics in the song unless you know that Lucinda Williams was born with spina bifida, hence the reference to "a comfortable bed that won't hurt my back". See which version you like better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXDntCyj7xs
I think you can see why Lucinda Williams was not more successful as a performer (although very successful as a song writer) from this clip - she obviously never had any training as a singer, and her delivery had some real rough edges, but I have a liking for her all the same. She's a washed up old drunk now, the years and the booze have not been kind to her, and she never did have any kind of commercial success. This is a good country song, though - and there are a lot of good country songs, as well as a mountain of just plain awful ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR-_0CkSlKY
And this is going into the SPAM filter for a while.
