I put together a mix CD today for Simon who's celebrating his 60th birthday. He's the husband of a colleague of mine, and all I really know about him is that he's English, he's a semi-pro musician and he likes Keith Jarrett, Juan Gilberto, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Hermeto Pascoal. So I thought I might share some tunes from the past few years that he may not have heard.
1. Comets on Fire - Hatched Upon the Age
2. Dungen - Mon Amour
3. Fleet Foxes - Your Protector
4. Frank Black - If Your Poison Gets You
5. George Hrab - One Hypnopompic Jerk
6. Maggi, Pierce & E.J. - Snowed In With You
7. Mars Volta - Vermicide
8. MGMT - Flash Delirium
9. Midlake - In The Ground
10. Roy Zimmerman - Socialist!
11. Seasick Steve - Thunderbird
12. Black Angels - Manipulation
Junior's empty Pop-Tarts box made a good CD cover. It surprises me that they can be sold under that name in the UK.

Either I'm old, or way out of touch, or these aren't around much in the U.S, because the only one I've heard of is George Hrab. I am claiming bonus points for having met him a few times, though.
My guess is that it's mainly a genre thing. I keep up reasonably well, but the people who book bands for the Debaser rock club right near the end of my commuter train line clearly have completely different tastes from mine. I hardly ever recognise the names of any bands on their posters.
Why surprised that pop-tarts are sold under that name in the UK? The principle meaning of tart is a sweet dessert in pastry. Even when it's used to mean prostitute it's not far off being an acceptable word to use in polite company.
To me it sounds like a young lady of generous morals who likes guitar music.
If your idea of pop music is that it is guitar-based, you may well be a few years behind :-) I think the double locution survives easily in English because pretty much every English child has met the idea of jam tarts before they've met the idea of sexuality, commercial or otherwise. I think these days very few people would actually describe a prostitute proper with the word 'tart', at least in the south of England; it's been generalised to a woman (or even a man, in more gender-neutral circles; I've been described as a tart in my time) who sleeps around, or just a stupid woman ('you daft tart'), the latter of which of course is a usage that needs to die along with every other phrase that uses female sexuality as a vocabulary of opprobrium. Sorry, I have a big rant I'm purposefully stifling there. Anyway, 'tart' doesn't have much sting left I'm glad to say.
This was a splendid idea of you, Martin. And it was so nice to see you and your beautiful children at the party.

Thanks for a lovely evening, Kat!
Thankyou so much, Martin! I had no idea people made music like this any more.
Hehe, I have two metres of CD:s and a sizeable hard drive full of psychedelic stuff that will blow your little noggin. (-;
