I bought two wooden model kits in Beijing last October. The kids and I finished the Imperial Dragon in late August. Since then, my daughter and I have worked on the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (ç¥å¹´æ®¿) which forms part of the 15th century Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. Now it's completed, and I shudder to think of what we're gonna do with it when we move house.

Back in October I picked up a couple of wooden model kits in a mall near the Drum Tower in Beijing. Yesterday my daughter and I finished the first one, an Imperial Chinese dragon (count the toes), brought to life by a talented but uncredited kitmaker. I built one of these kits, an apatosaurus,…
Touching down at Minneapolis airport shortly before 19:00 last night, my wife and I were met by the charming Heather Flowers and Erin Emmerich from the Anthro Dept. They got us installed at our hotel and joined us for dinner at the food court of the monstrous Mall of America. (There's a theme park…
I see Janet has a post series going on family + academic career. (Part 1; Part 2). I've written a bit on my own experience at the old blog (and I do mean "a bit;" it's much more of a Cliff notes version of events than Janet's), so I'm re-posting it here for another view from the trenches, so to…
...I was suffering the worst pain I'd ever experienced. I arrived at the hospital a bit before 1AM, and spent the next four hours or so walking around in agony. By 5AM, I decided I was ready for some of the good drugs, but the nurse informed me it was too late--time for the real fun to start. My…

A box slightly larger than the temple, immobilise at the bottom with pins. This is sufficient if carried carefully. Otherwise fill up the space in the box with wadded-up newspaper or bubble wrap. (Boxes and bubble wrap seem to magically proliferate, at least in my home.)

Everything you own goes in the rented U-Haul trailer, my dear, packed carefully with quilts and blankets (at least that's how we always did it). Then, at the last minute, you get in the car that's towing the U-Haul trailer with daughter on Mama's lap and box with temple inside, packed as "kai" states on daughter's lap (Mama buckled in safely, of course) and drive off. Was there another child? Then put Mama + daughter + carefully packed box in the back seat and other child in front seat. Drive carefully!
